Montreal Alouettes Punch Their Ticket to the Grey Cup in Dramatic Fashion
The Montreal Alouettes are heading back to the Grey Cup after pulling off a thrilling 19–16 victory over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the CFL’s East Final. It was a hard-fought battle that came right down to the wire, and once again, kicker Jose Maltos-Diaz was the man of the moment — delivering a 44-yard game-winning field goal in the final seconds to send Montreal fans into celebration mode.
This win means the Alouettes will now get the chance to compete for the Grey Cup for the second time in three years, aiming for what would be the ninth championship in the team’s storied history. What makes it even more special is that Montreal hadn’t won a divisional final in Hamilton since way back in 1970. This victory wasn’t just about advancing — it was about redemption, about beating a team that had gotten the better of them earlier this season.
Quarterback Davis Alexander once again proved why he’s become such a crucial part of Montreal’s recent success. Absent in both previous losses to the Tiger-Cats this year, Alexander stepped up with calm precision and strong leadership. His composure was tested multiple times, but he kept the Alouettes steady, guiding them to their 13th straight win since he joined the lineup.

The game itself unfolded like a chess match. Early on, both defenses held strong, with neither side giving much room for big plays. But momentum began to shift in the second quarter when Hamilton quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell tried to test Montreal’s secondary — and was picked off by defensive back Wesley Sutton, marking his fourth interception of the season. That turnover set the tone for what became a tight, strategic battle.
Jose Maltos-Diaz opened the scoring with a 29-yard field goal midway through the quarter. Hamilton’s Marc Liegghio responded late in the half with his own, tying the game 3–3, but Alexander and his offense didn’t let the half end quietly. They marched back into scoring position, setting up another Maltos kick — this time from 36 yards — to give the Alouettes a 6–3 halftime lead.
The real breakthrough came after the break. Alexander found receiver Tyler Snead on a beautiful 28-yard strike for the first touchdown of the game, extending Montreal’s lead to 13–3. The Tiger-Cats, however, refused to go quietly. Bo Levi Mitchell led a strong drive capped off by a touchdown to Shemar Bridges, tying things up late in the fourth.
But with the score at 16–16 and less than two minutes to play, Montreal had the ball one last time. Charleston Rambo made a crucial catch, shaking off a tackle to move the Alouettes into field goal range. And then — with ice in his veins — Maltos-Diaz stepped up and nailed the 44-yarder that sealed the win.
With that, the Alouettes booked their place in the 112th Grey Cup. Whether they’ll face the BC Lions or Saskatchewan Roughriders next remains to be seen, but one thing’s for sure — Montreal is marching to the championship once again, fueled by grit, redemption, and one unforgettable kick.
