Novak Djokovic Denies ATP Finals Leak as Retirement Talk Resurfaces

So, there’s been quite a buzz around Novak Djokovic lately — and not just about his performance on court. A fresh wave of headlines broke after reports claimed that Djokovic had already confirmed his participation in the 2025 ATP Finals. But according to the man himself, that’s not exactly true.

The whole thing started when Angelo Binaghi, the president of the Italian Tennis Federation, told a radio channel that Djokovic would definitely be in Turin for the ATP Finals. Naturally, fans got excited — after all, the Serbian legend skipped the 2024 edition, and many assumed he might be scaling back his schedule as he edges closer to retirement.

However, after defeating Alejandro Tabilo in straight sets at the ATP 250 Athens tournament — 7-6 (3), 6-1 — Djokovic was asked directly about Binaghi’s claim. His response was calm but firm: “I don’t know where he got that information from. Certainly not from me or my team. I’ll make my decision at the end of this tournament.” That denial immediately put the rumors back in question.

Still, even without official confirmation, Djokovic has already qualified for the ATP Finals for an incredible 18th time — tying Roger Federer’s all-time record. He’s also a seven-time ATP Finals champion, last lifting the trophy in 2023. So, whether he decides to play or not, his legacy at the year-end tournament is already monumental.

But what’s really captured attention again is the ongoing discussion about his retirement. Just a year ago, Djokovic seemed to hint that his focus was shifting mainly toward Grand Slams and representing Serbia internationally. Yet, now at 38, he sounds more motivated than ever.

In a recent interview with Greek media outlet SDNA, Djokovic said that while many expected him to retire after winning Olympic gold, that was never his plan. “I don’t play tennis just for achievements,” he explained. “Of course, they’re a big part of my motivation, but I truly enjoy competing. I enjoy the process, the energy, and everything tennis gives me — both personally and professionally.”

He even spoke about the balance between fame and purpose: “I know that as long as I play, I’ll be in the public eye. I’m aware of that responsibility, but it doesn’t bother me. On the contrary, I enjoy it because I can help grow the sport.”

Despite battling injuries and a packed schedule, Djokovic made it clear he’s not ready to walk away yet. “There’s more reason I’m still playing than just results. Even after achieving everything, I still feel inspired to take on new challenges,” he said.

So, while the world speculates about his next move — and whether that Turin appearance will happen — one thing’s certain: Novak Djokovic isn’t done writing his story just yet.
