November’s Beaver Supermoon Set to Shine as 2025’s Brightest Full Moon
This week, skywatchers across the world are in for a real treat — the biggest and brightest full moon of 2025 is on its way. Known as the Beaver Supermoon , this spectacular lunar event will light up the night sky on Wednesday, November 5th , coinciding perfectly with Bonfire Night in the UK. It’s being called the most dazzling full moon of the year, and it’s expected to put on quite a show if the weather cooperates.
So, what makes this particular full moon so special? Well, it’s not just any ordinary full moon — it’s a supermoon . The term “supermoon” is used when the Moon is at or near its closest point to Earth in its orbit, known as the perigee . Because the Moon’s path around Earth isn’t a perfect circle but rather an elongated oval, its distance from us changes slightly throughout the month. When a full moon happens close to perigee, it can appear up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than a regular full moon.

This November’s full moon will be the closest one to Earth all year , sitting at just under 357,000 kilometers away . That means it will look noticeably larger to the naked eye, especially when it first rises on the eastern horizon around sunset — roughly 3:55 p.m. GMT in the UK . Many people find the Moon looks even more impressive when it’s low in the sky, thanks to the so-called “moon illusion,” which tricks our brains into seeing it as bigger when we can compare it with objects on the ground.
Now, why is it called the Beaver Moon ? The name actually dates back centuries. It’s believed to have originated from Native American tribes and early European settlers , referring to the time of year when beavers are busiest preparing for winter — building dams and gathering food before the cold sets in. Interestingly, beavers themselves are making a comeback in parts of England and Scotland after centuries of absence, thanks to rewilding projects.
As for viewing conditions, the weather might play a deciding role. Forecasters predict a mixed week across the UK, with spells of rain and wind moving from west to east, but also some calmer, clearer intervals — particularly in the south and east . So, those hoping for a perfect view should keep an eye on local forecasts and maybe have a backup viewing spot ready.
If you miss this one, don’t worry too much — there’s another supermoon coming up soon, on December 4th , which will be the year’s final one. But for now, this November Beaver Supermoon promises to be a breathtaking reminder of just how beautiful our night sky can be. So, grab a warm coat, step outside, and let the biggest moon of 2025 steal the show.
