Olusegun Awolowo, Grandson of Obafemi Awolowo, Passes Away at 62
Today, we reflect on the life of Olusegun Awolowo, the grandson of the late Obafemi Awolowo, who has sadly passed away at the age of 62. Known affectionately as Segun, his death was announced by the Awolowo family on Thursday, marking the end of a life defined by service, dedication, and deep familial love. While the cause of his passing has not been disclosed, the legacy he leaves behind speaks volumes about the man he was.
Segun Awolowo was born on September 27, 1963, two months after the tragic death of his father, Segun Awolowo Sr., who died in a car accident. Raised initially by his mother and siblings, he later grew up under the care of his aunt, Tola Oyediran, and her husband. Despite the early loss, he was guided with love and care, laying the foundation for a life committed to excellence and service.

His educational journey began at Mayhill Convent School, where he studied alongside Dolapo Osinbajo. He then attended Igbobi College in Lagos before completing his secondary education at Government College, Ibadan. Following his academic pursuits, Segun earned his LLB degree from Ogun State University, now Olabisi Onabanjo University, and was called to the Nigerian Bar in December 1989. His early legal career included stints at prestigious firms such as Abayomi Sogbesan & Co. and G.O.K. Ajayi & Co., where he honed the skills that would later define his public service.
Segun’s public service career was distinguished and impactful. He served as a Special Assistant in the administrations of Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, focusing on traditional institutions, legal affairs, and social development. In 2013, he was appointed Executive Director and CEO of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), a role he fulfilled with vision and integrity until 2022, receiving reappointment from President Muhammadu Buhari in 2018. During his tenure, he spearheaded initiatives such as partnerships with major retail chains to expand the reach of Nigerian products across Africa and worked tirelessly to strengthen Nigeria’s non-oil exports.
In 2021, Segun Awolowo’s credibility was further recognized when he was unanimously elected President of the National Trade Promotion Organisations (TPOs) for ECOWAS member states. Later, in 2023, he was appointed secretary of the national action committee on the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), cementing his reputation as a skilled administrator and a champion of trade and development in Africa.
The loss of Segun Awolowo has been felt widely. Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun expressed his deep sorrow, describing him as a courageous public servant, a gentleman of integrity, and a figure whose impact transcended both personal and professional spheres. The Awolowo family, meanwhile, remembered him as a phenomenal husband, father, and grandfather — steady, wise, and endlessly loving, whose life was lived with purpose, humility, and a generous spirit.
Segun Awolowo’s journey may have been cut short, but his contributions to Nigeria and his enduring legacy of service, family devotion, and moral integrity will be remembered by all who knew him. May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace.
