Over 50 Injured in Jakarta School Mosque Explosion
Earlier today, a shocking incident unfolded in Jakarta, Indonesia, leaving more than 50 people injured after explosions rocked a mosque inside a high school complex. The blasts occurred around midday during Friday prayers at SMA 72, a state-run high school in the northern Kelapa Gading district. Authorities have identified a 17-year-old student as the suspected perpetrator, who was also injured and is currently undergoing surgery.
Witnesses described a scene of panic as at least two loud explosions echoed inside and outside the mosque just as the sermon began. Grey smoke filled the area, sending students and staff fleeing in fear. Many of the victims sustained burns and injuries from shattered glass, with a significant number of students requiring hospitalization. Authorities later confirmed that 54 people were injured, most of them students, some seriously, and trauma support is being provided for those affected.

A bomb disposal team was deployed to secure the site and ensure there were no additional explosive devices. Early reports indicated that the student suspect had brought a homemade device into the mosque. Fellow students described him as a “loner” who had previously been bullied and had created drawings depicting violence. Investigators are looking into whether bullying played a role in motivating the attack.
During the investigation, police found what appeared to be a toy submachine gun and a toy pistol near the scene. The submachine gun had inscriptions referencing Brenton Tarrant, the perpetrator of the 2019 Christchurch mosque shootings in New Zealand. Officials, however, clarified that the weapons were not real and cautioned the public against assuming the incident was a terrorist attack until the investigation is complete.
The suspect and another student were both reported to be undergoing surgery for injuries sustained in the blasts. Indonesian police emphasized that the investigation is ongoing, focusing on how the student assembled the device and carried out the attack. Officials have also visited victims in hospitals to reassure families and stressed that the city is safe and under control despite the frightening events.
Videos shared on social media captured terrified students running across the school grounds, some covering their ears from the explosions, while others were carried on stretchers. Relatives rushed to nearby hospitals seeking updates on loved ones, as the community grappled with the aftermath of the shocking incident.
Authorities continue to examine all evidence, interview witnesses, and gather information to understand the full circumstances behind this alarming event, while the city’s security forces remain vigilant to prevent further harm.
