Stranger Things 5 Opens with a Chilling Return to Will Byers’ Nightmare

The wait is nearly over — and Netflix has just given fans a haunting sneak peek at Stranger Things Season 5. The opening five minutes of the final season were unveiled during a virtual watch party, and they take us right back to where everything began: Hawkins, 1983. It’s a perfect, bone-chilling callback to the original mystery that started it all — the disappearance of Will Byers.

The episode, titled “The Crawl,” opens deep inside the Upside Down, where a terrified, de-aged Will Byers — played by Noah Schnapp — is seen trembling inside his makeshift fort, Castle Byers. He softly hums The Clash’s “Should I Stay or Should I Go,” the song his brother Jonathan once played for him back in Season 1. That familiar tune becomes a kind of emotional anchor, connecting the audience to the very first moments of Stranger Things lore. But the nostalgia doesn’t last long — an eerie cracking sound breaks the silence, and the nightmare begins again.

A Demogorgon, the same monstrous creature that haunted the early seasons, appears outside the fort. Will tries to fight back, firing his hunting rifle — another subtle throwback to his desperate struggle in the first season. He climbs a tree, trying to escape, but it’s no use. The Demogorgon catches him, dragging him through the forest and straight into the clutches of something far worse — Vecna.

The scene then cuts to the Upside Down’s version of the Hawkins Library, shrouded in darkness and red lightning. There, Vecna — played by Jamie Campbell Bower — emerges from the shadows with terrifying calm. “At long last, we can begin,” he says, as one of his vine-like tentacles wraps around Will. What follows is deeply unsettling: Vecna injects a strange, unknown substance into Will’s body while whispering, “You and I, we’re going to do such beautiful things together.” It’s a horrifying and emotional sequence that immediately sets the tone for the final season.

After this flashback, the story fast-forwards to Hawkins under military quarantine. The town is suffocating under surveillance, and the once-normal lives of the kids are gone. Co-creator Ross Duffer explained that this season doesn’t ease into the story — “it’s sprinting from the start.” Matt Duffer added, “Nothing in Hawkins is normal anymore.”

Fans can expect answers to the biggest mysteries surrounding the Upside Down, drawn from a 25-page mythology document the Duffer brothers wrote during the show’s first season. The long-awaited confrontation between Vecna and the Hawkins crew is finally coming — and it promises to be more intense, emotional, and terrifying than ever.

The first four episodes of Stranger Things 5 drop on Netflix on November 26 , followed by three more on Christmas Day , and the grand finale arriving New Year’s Eve . It’s the end of an era — and Hawkins is about to face its darkest hour yet.
