Thatcher Demko Set to Return as Canucks Face Jets in Key Matchup
After a brief break from the crease, Vancouver Canucks goaltender Thatcher Demko is making his return to the lineup — and fans couldn’t be happier. The 29-year-old star netminder will be back in goal on Tuesday night when the Canucks host the Winnipeg Jets, marking his first appearance since that thrilling 5–4 overtime win against the Nashville Predators on November 3rd.
Head coach Adam Foote confirmed the news after the team’s morning skate, saying Demko would start against Winnipeg. It’s a significant moment for Vancouver, as Demko has been a key pillar for the team’s success this season, posting a 5–4–0 record with a .912 save percentage and a solid 2.57 goals-against average so far.

Demko’s brief absence led to speculation about whether he was dealing with another injury, especially given his history. Foote addressed those concerns last week, explaining that Demko was simply “taking care of himself” in what’s been a jam-packed schedule. While he didn’t mention any specific medical issues, it’s no secret that the goaltender has had to be cautious after missing much of the previous season due to a knee injury suffered during Game 1 of the 2023–24 playoff series against Nashville.
That injury had sidelined Demko for a long stretch, limiting him to just 23 games last year. Even so, his performance was still competitive, showing flashes of the elite form that once earned him All-Star recognition. His return this season had been met with optimism, and his early stats suggested that he was back to his reliable self — calm under pressure, sharp with his reflexes, and confident between the pipes.
Foote’s decision to rest him over the past couple of games seems to have paid off. Over the weekend, backup Kevin Lankinen took over goaltending duties, including in Sunday’s 4–3 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. Rookie Jiri Patera, called up from the Abbotsford Canucks, served as the backup. Now, with Demko back in net, Vancouver will look to build momentum as they wrap up their four-game homestand.
The upcoming matchup against the Jets isn’t just another regular game. Winnipeg has been a competitive side this season, known for their aggressive offense and quick transitions. Having Demko back in goal gives Vancouver an important edge — his composure and experience often make the difference in tight contests.
For fans, it’s a sigh of relief to see him back. The Canucks’ defense will feel a renewed sense of confidence with their No. 1 goalie standing tall once again. All eyes will be on Rogers Arena tonight as Thatcher Demko makes his much-anticipated return, ready to help his team protect home ice and chase another crucial win in this packed NHL season.
