The Best (and Worst) Chocolate Advent Calendars to Count Down Christmas
When it comes to the festive season, nothing quite signals the start of December like an Advent calendar. Whether it’s for yourself or for the family, a chocolate Advent calendar is a delicious and exciting way to count down to Christmas. But with so many options on the market, how do you know which ones stand out? I recently gathered my family—from little ones to the more seasoned adults—and together, we tasted and rated some of the top chocolate Advent calendars for 2025. The verdict? There were plenty of sweet surprises, but also a few duds that didn’t quite hit the mark.
To kick things off, we all agreed that variety was key. We wanted a bit of everything behind the doors—different chocolates, a touch of Christmas magic, and even a bit of nostalgia. Packaging also played a big part. After all, a festive calendar should look good on the mantelpiece. Based on our taste tests and the overall experience, here’s a rundown of the best (and worst) Advent calendars we tried.
Best Overall: Hotel Chocolat Milk Chocolate Advent Calendar If you're looking for something stylish and delightful, this one is hard to beat. It’s compact, sleek, and packed with different Christmas-themed chocolates. The highlight is the surprise behind each door—a little message, which added a personal touch that many calendars lack. The foil barrier behind each door created extra excitement, making the experience feel like a true treat every day. Plus, the chocolate is top-notch, making it a classy yet festive pick.
Best Bargain: Baci Chocolate Christmas Advent Calendar At £15 for 278g, this calendar might seem a bit steep at first, but it’s actually a great value. Behind each door is a full-sized Baci chocolate, each with a different flavour. The packaging is festive without being too branded, and the chocolates are generous. It’s the kind of calendar you could easily give as a gift—and it won’t break the bank.

Best Grown-Up Option: Butlers Chocolate Advent Calendar This calendar is a dream for chocolate lovers who prefer something more refined. It’s not the flashiest, but the quality of chocolate behind each door is exceptional. We sampled flavours like Himalayan sea salt and date and almond, which made for a deliciously grown-up experience. The presentation is elegant, making it a perfect option for adults.
Tony’s Chocolonely Advent Calendar As an eco-conscious choice, this Fairtrade-certified calendar is a win. The cracker-shaped doors were fun to open, and the chocolates inside were a good size. While the design wasn’t my favourite—too loud and branded for my taste—the chocolate itself was fantastic, making it a great option for those looking to make a responsible choice this Christmas.
Lindt Lindor Assorted Mini Calendar Lindt is a Christmas favourite, and while I love their smooth chocolate, this calendar didn’t quite meet expectations. The Lindor balls inside were smaller than expected, and though it was pretty to look at with its large gold box, the experience didn’t feel as luxurious as I had hoped. Still, the special treat for Christmas Eve—one larger chocolate—was a nice touch.
Worst: Kinder 24 Minis Advent Calendar As a self-confessed Kinder fan, I had high hopes for this one. But I was left disappointed. The calendar felt basic—just the same chocolate every day, with no surprises or variation. Compared to other options, it lacked the festive appeal and excitement that a good Advent calendar should offer.
There were other calendars in the mix, but these stood out as the winners and losers of our taste test. Overall, the best calendars were the ones that combined quality chocolate with a bit of flair—whether through packaging, surprises, or varied flavours. And as it turns out, we’re all still big kids at heart, thrilled to open each door and reveal a new treat every day.
