Tuberculosis Outbreak Hits Edmonton’s Inner-City Homeless Population

A tuberculosis outbreak has been officially declared in Edmonton, affecting the city’s inner-city and homeless population. Health authorities confirmed that the outbreak was identified after two individuals living in central Edmonton were found to be infected with the same strain of TB, indicating recent local transmission. This announcement came from Primary Care Alberta’s tuberculosis program, in coordination with Edmonton zone medical officers of health, in October 2025.

So far this year, twelve cases of tuberculosis have been reported with links to Edmonton’s downtown and its homeless community. Of these, three people were confirmed to carry the same strain and are considered part of the declared outbreak. Health officials have described this as a significant increase compared to previous years, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

Tuberculosis, commonly known as TB, is a preventable and treatable bacterial infection that primarily attacks the lungs but can affect other parts of the body. It spreads through the air when someone coughs, sneezes, or spits, making close contact a key risk factor. While TB can be successfully treated with antibiotics, the World Health Organization still reports that around 1.5 million people die from the disease globally each year, making it the leading infectious killer worldwide. The infection is also particularly dangerous for people living with HIV and contributes to the growing problem of antibiotic resistance.

Despite the severity of the disease, the outbreak in Edmonton is not considered a threat to the general public at this time. Health authorities are focusing on the affected communities, conducting thorough contact tracing, and screening those identified as having close contact with confirmed cases. Only individuals directly contacted by Primary Care Alberta are regarded as exposed, and specific details about cases are being withheld to protect privacy.

As part of the outbreak response, health officials are working closely with inner-city agencies to provide information, support, and assessments. Screening is being carried out to identify anyone at risk and ensure early treatment. Residents who have concerns or need guidance are encouraged to contact the Edmonton TB clinic directly.

This outbreak serves as a reminder that even preventable diseases like tuberculosis can quickly resurface in vulnerable communities, emphasizing the need for vigilance, timely medical care, and community-based health support. Edmonton’s health authorities are taking swift action to contain the spread and provide care for those affected, ensuring that the outbreak is managed carefully and efficiently.
