Victor Conte, the BALCO Scandal Mastermind, Dies at 75

Victor Conte — the man once at the heart of one of sports’ biggest doping scandals — has died at the age of 75 after battling pancreatic cancer. His passing was announced by his company, SNAC, through a heartfelt message on X (formerly Twitter), calling him a “fearless leader” whose legacy will “carry forward, strong and forever.”

Conte’s name became infamous in the early 2000s when he was exposed as the mastermind behind the Bay Area Laboratory Co-operative, or BALCO — a company deeply involved in distributing performance-enhancing drugs to some of the most prominent athletes of the time. Federal agents raided BALCO and Conte’s California home in 2003, unearthing evidence that linked him to stars like baseball icon Barry Bonds and Olympic sprinter Marion Jones. In 2005, Conte pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute steroids and money laundering, serving four months in federal prison.

Before his fall from grace, Conte’s story had a very different beginning. Born in Fresno, California, in 1950, he first pursued music, playing bass with the funk band Tower of Power in the late 1970s. But his interests shifted to human performance, leading him to found BALCO in 1984. What started as a nutrition and supplement company soon became ground zero for a massive doping network that forever changed how professional sports confronted performance-enhancing drugs.

Even after serving his sentence, Conte never faded from the spotlight. In a strange twist, he transformed from scandal figure to outspoken anti-doping advocate. He collaborated with organizations like the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA), offering insider knowledge to help improve testing systems. At the same time, he launched SNAC — Scientific Nutrition for Advanced Conditioning — which promoted itself as a legitimate supplement and performance brand.

Conte’s later years were marked by contradictions. He claimed regret for the damage caused by BALCO but also expressed pride in the athletic achievements linked to his past. His comeback included a surprising reemergence in professional boxing, advising world champions such as Terence Crawford, Claressa Shields, and Devin Haney. Many boxers praised his training methods and nutrition expertise, despite lingering skepticism from critics who doubted his sincerity.

Even as he underwent chemotherapy, Conte stayed involved with his fighters. “To have seven fighters on huge platforms in the midst of fighting cancer — this is what I do,” he said earlier this year, determined to stay connected to the sport he loved, despite its controversies.

Victor Conte’s life was one of extremes — from music to science, from scandal to redemption, and from disgrace to renewed respect in some corners of the sports world. Love him or loathe him, there’s no denying he left an indelible mark on how the world views performance enhancement in athletics.
