Volkanovski Set for Major Homecoming at UFC 325
Alright, let me walk you through this exciting update from the world of UFC, because fans—especially Australian fans—have something big to look forward to.
So, Alex Volkanovski, one of Australia’s most celebrated fighters, is officially set to defend his featherweight title on home soil this coming February. And what makes it even more special is that it’ll be his first fight in his home state since 2017. The event is part of UFC 325, which will take place at Sydney Olympic Park, and the atmosphere is already expected to be electric with a sell-out crowd almost guaranteed.
Volkanovski will be stepping into the octagon for a rematch against Brazilian contender Diego Lopes. The two last met earlier this year in Miami, where Volkanovski reclaimed the vacant featherweight title with a unanimous decision win. It was seen as a strong comeback performance, and this follow-up fight on February 1 is being talked about as a chance for Lopes to settle the score. Lopes, who enters the bout with a 27–7 record, has bounced back since their first meeting with a solid win over Jean Silva in Texas.

For Volkanovski, this fight carries even more weight. Not only will he be performing in front of home supporters for the first time in two years, but with retirement looming at age 37, this might be the last time Australian fans get to witness “The Great” compete live in his own country. His last fight on Australian soil was back in early 2023 in Perth, when he took on Islam Makhachev for the lightweight title—a fight he narrowly lost.
There had been some early chatter about fellow Aussie star Robert Whittaker possibly joining the card as a co-headliner, but he has since confirmed he won’t be appearing at UFC 325.
And it doesn’t stop there. UFC president Dana White released even more news, revealing that UFC 324 will take place the weekend before in Las Vegas. That event will feature an interim lightweight title fight between American powerhouse Justin Gaethje and British rising star Paddy Pimblett. Current lightweight champion Ilia Topuria is stepping away briefly due to personal reasons, but White emphasized that Topuria will remain the undisputed champ. The winner of the Gaethje-Pimblett clash will eventually face him for the full title later in 2026.
On top of that, fans of the women’s bantamweight division are getting a treat as well. Kayla Harrison is set to defend her title against the returning Amanda Nunes, who is coming out of retirement for her first fight since June 2023.
So overall, UFC 325 is shaping up to be one of the biggest events on Australian soil in years, with Volkanovski’s homecoming rematch taking center stage and an entire weekend of high-stakes action surrounding it.
