A Young Texas Mother’s Final Morning and the Deadly Plot Behind It
What should have been a routine start to the workday became a horrifying tragedy for 24-year-old Alyssa Burkett, a young Texas mother whose life was violently cut short outside her workplace. On a fall morning in October 2020, Alyssa arrived at the Greentree Apartments in Carrollton, where she worked as an assistant office manager. She was a devoted mom to her infant daughter, Willow, and nothing about that morning suggested it would be her last.
As Alyssa parked her car, a dark-colored SUV pulled up beside her. According to investigators, a man dressed in dark clothing suddenly opened fire, shooting her through the driver’s side window. Despite being wounded, Alyssa managed to escape from her car and run toward the leasing office for help. But the attack didn’t stop there. She was chased down, brutally stabbed and slashed dozens of times in a scene that police later described as one of the most disturbing they had ever encountered. Emergency calls were made, but Alyssa’s injuries were too severe. She died shortly after.

From the beginning, detectives believed this was not a random act of violence. The attack was precise, public, and intensely personal. Attention quickly turned to Alyssa’s former partner, Andrew Beard, with whom she shared a child and an ongoing custody dispute. The relationship had grown bitter, and Alyssa had reportedly expressed fears that she was being watched or tracked in the weeks leading up to her death.
Investigators soon uncovered chilling evidence. A vehicle matching the suspect’s SUV was found nearby, abandoned. Inside, police discovered disguises, including dark makeup and a fake beard, along with signs that the car had been modified to carry out the ambush. Beard later surrendered to police and ultimately pleaded guilty to federal charges connected to Alyssa’s death. He was sentenced to 43 years in prison.
However, the case did not end there. Beard claimed that his fiancée at the time, Holly Elkins, had pushed him toward the crime. Text messages were revealed in which loyalty was demanded in “ride or die” terms, and prosecutors argued that Alyssa was seen as an obstacle to a future the couple wanted together. Elkins was later arrested, tried, and convicted for her role in the conspiracy. Although part of her conviction was overturned on appeal, she remains sentenced to life in prison without parole.
Today, Alyssa’s daughter Willow is being raised by Alyssa’s mother, Teresa Collard, who says the little girl is a living reminder of the daughter she lost. As the case is revisited in ABC’s 20/20, Alyssa’s story stands as a haunting reminder of how jealousy, control, and obsession can escalate into devastating violence, leaving behind a child, a grieving family, and a community forever changed.
