Arctic Air and Back-to-Back Clippers Set to Shake Up the Week

So here’s what’s unfolding across the Midwest and the Northeast right now—and honestly, it’s shaping up to be one of those weeks where winter refuses to take a break. A string of fast-moving clipper systems is being lined up, each one bringing fresh shots of cold air and chances for snow, all leading into a true arctic blast by the weekend. It’s the kind of weather pattern that just keeps reloading, and a lot of people are going to feel the impact before things finally settle down.

The first push of cold air arrived over the weekend, driven by an early clipper that dropped temperatures below zero in parts of the upper Midwest. This wasn’t just a chilly weekend—it followed several days of record-setting cold across the Heartland. And instead of easing up, the atmosphere is sending even more reinforcing waves of cold air throughout the week.

By Monday, that colder air is sweeping south and east, spreading across the Appalachians and down the I-95 corridor. Cities like Philadelphia, New York, and Boston are expected to drop about 10 degrees in just 24 hours. High temperatures may struggle to get above freezing, and once breezy winds kick in, it will feel even colder than what the thermometer shows. By Tuesday morning, lows in the teens and 20s could extend all the way south toward Baltimore and even into D.C.’s outskirts. Upstate New York and northern New England may dip below zero again, with a few additional record lows possibly being challenged.

Snow is definitely part of the storyline this week, though not in the form of major snowstorms. Instead, these clipper systems are expected to bring steady, light accumulations—especially across the Northern Plains, the Great Lakes, and parts of the Upper Midwest. One of the clippers tracking slightly farther north is forecast to bring more snow to the Great Lakes region Tuesday into Wednesday. Then another system follows Wednesday into Thursday, carrying slightly warmer air. That means places like Detroit may be dealing with a wintry mix instead of all snow.

Cities such as Minneapolis, Chicago, Cincinnati, Detroit, and Cleveland are all in line to see snow at some point, depending on how each clipper tracks and how the temperatures fluctuate.

While the East and Midwest bundle up, the West is experiencing almost the opposite story. Temperatures are running well above average, with highs up to 10 degrees warmer than normal. Las Vegas is brushing against the 70-degree mark, and milder air will even spill into the Plains early next week. Sioux Falls, for example, goes from a high of 11 degrees on Sunday to a much more comfortable 40 degrees by Tuesday.

But the break won’t last long. Once the final clipper system moves through, that serious arctic air is expected to arrive, dropping weekend temperatures into the teens with single-digit lows. Winter is clearly settling in early—and it looks like it plans to stay for a while.
