Australia Braces for a Split Christmas as Heatwaves and Showers Collide
With Christmas Day just around the corner, Australia’s festive plans are being shaped by a sharply divided weather forecast. According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the nation is heading into Christmas on the back of an intense heatwave, and while some regions will be sweating through scorching conditions, others will be reaching for jumpers or umbrellas.
For much of southern Australia, extreme and severe heat has already been felt, and it’s expected to linger through the weekend before gradually easing. This means Christmas will arrive after days of relentless temperatures in the high 30s and low 40s for some areas, particularly across New South Wales, Victoria, and parts of South Australia. It has been warned that the heatwave conditions along sections of the NSW coast, including the Illawarra and south coast, have reached extreme levels, with inland areas also baking under prolonged heat.

Queensland is shaping up to have a classic humid Christmas. Warm and cloudy skies are forecast, with moderate rainfall and thunderstorms possible across northern and central parts of the state. Brisbane is expected to be hot, pushing into the low 30s, and the combination of heat and humidity could make it feel even warmer.
New South Wales is tipped to enjoy mostly dry and sunny conditions, which will be welcome news for outdoor celebrations. Coastal showers may drift through parts of the east, but rainfall is expected to be light. Sydney should see relatively comfortable conditions compared to recent days, while Canberra is forecast to be warm and sunny.
In contrast, Victoria and Tasmania are in for a much cooler Christmas. Melbourne is expected to struggle to reach 20 degrees, with a few isolated showers around and generally mild conditions. Tasmania will feel even cooler, particularly in the west, where temperatures will stay in the mid-teens. There’s even a chance of snow on higher peaks, which feels a world away from the heat gripping the mainland.
Out west, however, Christmas will be anything but mild. Western Australia is set to record the hottest capital city in the country, with Perth forecast to hit around 39 degrees. Inland and coastal areas alike will be baking, and the heat is expected to arrive early in the day. The Northern Territory will also be hot and humid, with Darwin looking at temperatures in the low 30s alongside showers and storms.
With such extreme contrasts across the country, Australians are being reminded to plan carefully, stay hydrated, and take heat safety seriously. This Christmas, the weather will be as dramatic and varied as the celebrations themselves.
