Backlund Leads the Charge as Flames Snap Golden Knights’ Streak
So, let’s talk about what went down in Calgary, because this was one of those games where the Flames made a real statement at home. On Saturday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome, the Calgary Flames came out flying and earned a convincing 6–3 win over the Vegas Golden Knights, powered by a huge performance from Mikael Backlund.
Backlund was right at the center of everything. Two goals were scored by the veteran forward, and an assist was added for good measure, making it a three-point night. From the opening minutes, his presence was felt. Calgary struck first early in the game when a loose puck found its way to Backlund, and it was calmly chipped past the Vegas goalie to give the Flames a 1–0 lead. That early goal seemed to settle the crowd and give Calgary confidence right away.

The Flames didn’t stop there. Adam Klapka made it 2–0 midway through the first period by deflecting a long shot while cutting across the crease, showing just how aggressive Calgary was around the net. Vegas did respond with a goal from Reilly Smith, but any momentum was quickly shut down when Ryan Lomberg buried a two-on-none chance to restore a two-goal cushion. By the end of the first period, it already felt like Calgary was in control.
That control only grew in the second. Backlund struck again, cleaning up a rebound at the side of the net, a goal that also marked MacKenzie Weegar’s 200th career NHL assist. Then came one of the key moments of the night. Joel Farabee scored a short-handed goal after forcing a turnover and driving straight into the slot, snapping a shot off the post and in. At that point, a 5–1 lead was on the board, and the Saddledome was buzzing.
Vegas tried to push back. Kaedan Korczak found the net, and later Mark Stone added a power-play goal in the third period to make things a bit more interesting. But any real comeback hopes were kept in check by solid goaltending from Devin Cooley, who turned aside 34 shots and looked composed under pressure.
As the game wound down, Jonathan Huberdeau sealed it with an empty-net goal, putting a final stamp on a 6–3 victory. Connor Zary and MacKenzie Weegar quietly had outstanding nights as well, each picking up three assists and driving play from behind the scenes.
In the bigger picture, this win mattered. Calgary picked up its second straight victory and continued a strong run at home, while Vegas saw its eight-game point streak come to an end. For the Flames, it was a complete team effort, but on this night, it was Mikael Backlund who clearly set the tone and led the way.
