Cameron Green Smashes IPL Records as 2026 Auction Rewrites History
The IPL 2026 auction has delivered one of its biggest headlines yet, and it revolves around Australian all-rounder Cameron Green, who has officially become the most expensive overseas player in Indian Premier League history. In a dramatic bidding war that kept everyone watching, Green was snapped up by Kolkata Knight Riders for a massive 25.2 crore, and that single moment instantly rewrote the record books.
What made this deal even more intense was the competition. Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings were both heavily involved, driving the price higher and higher before KKR finally landed the winning bid. In doing so, they surpassed their own previous overseas record, which was set when Mitchell Starc was bought for 24.75 crore at the 2024 auction. Overall, Green now stands as the third most expensive player in IPL history, behind only Indian stars Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer.

At just 26 years old, Green’s journey to this point has been far from straightforward. He has already represented Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru in earlier IPL seasons, where his value as a genuine all-rounder was clearly established. Across 29 matches, 707 runs were scored at a strike-rate comfortably above 150, while 16 wickets were taken, showing his ability to contribute in both departments.
Interestingly, Green was officially listed in the auction as a capped batter, something he later described as a simple registration mistake by his management. Despite that technicality, it has been made clear that he will be available as a full all-rounder for KKR. That flexibility is a major reason franchises were willing to push the bidding so high.
There is, however, a financial twist to the story. Under a relatively new IPL rule, overseas players are subject to a maximum fee cap of 18 crore. This means that although Green was bought for 25.2 crore, anything above the cap will be redirected into a BCCI-controlled player welfare fund. As a result, his actual take-home amount will be significantly lower than the headline figure, even though the record still stands officially.
Green’s price tag becomes even more remarkable when you consider his recent injury history. He missed the entire 2025 IPL season following back surgery and only returned to action earlier this year, initially as a specialist batter. Since then, he has worked his way back into an all-round role and is currently being used in that capacity by Australia during the ongoing Ashes series.
Beyond Green, the auction has continued to produce mixed fortunes for overseas players. England opener Ben Duckett earned his first IPL contract with Delhi Capitals, while several high-profile names went unsold. As the auction rolls on, though, one thing is already certain: Cameron Green’s signing has set the tone, raised the bar, and added another unforgettable chapter to IPL auction history.
