So, here’s what’s happening across Cincinnati right now. Even though many people probably glanced outside earlier and thought, “There’s no snow yet, maybe this storm won’t be so bad,” the reality is that the real action is only just beginning. A winter storm has been moving in slowly, fighting through a layer of dry air sitting over the region, but the atmosphere is finally starting to moisten up. Tiny flakes have already been spotted around downtown—including near Fountain Square—and more steady snow is expected to start falling overnight.

Because of this incoming system, several schools across the area have already announced closures and delays for Tuesday. The biggest update came from Cincinnati Public Schools, which confirmed at 4 a.m. that all schools will be closed and no staff should report. Many districts throughout the region are expected to follow as conditions worsen, especially with snow expected to fall right through the early morning hours.

Snow showers started after 9 p.m. Monday, and while the first bursts were light, they were strong enough to coat roads quickly. Between midnight and 3 a.m., steadier snow began spreading across the region, marking the beginning of the main wave of accumulation. Meteorologists say this storm will continue to build through the early morning commute, with some pockets of heavier, banded snow pushing in from the west. That means visibility could drop fast, and untreated roads may become icy and slick.

By 7 a.m. Tuesday, most places around Cincinnati are expected to have about 2 to 4 inches of snow on the ground. A few areas may even see totals closer to 5 inches, depending on how those heavier bands line up. While major ice accumulation is not expected, a little light icing could appear south and southeast of the city as the storm first moves in.

Drivers heading out early Tuesday should expect a slower, more cautious commute. Roads, bridges, and overpasses will likely stay snow-covered through the morning, and temperatures are staying well below freezing—dropping into the mid-20s overnight and struggling to rise much on Tuesday. Even once the snow stops, the cold will hang around. Forecasters say the rest of the week will remain frigid, with highs barely climbing above freezing, if at all. And to make things even more interesting, another round of snow is possible by Sunday.

So, while today may have started calm, the Cincinnati region is now fully under the grip of a winter weather advisory. Snow is arriving, schools are shutting down, and the city is getting ready for a very cold week ahead. Stay warm, stay safe, and if you’re commuting—give yourself plenty of extra time.
