Cold Weather and Community Support Shape the 2025 Dallas Marathon
Marathon weekend in Dallas kicked off with excitement, but the weather threw a bit of a curveball. While Saturday’s 5K and 10K runs were blessed with milder temperatures, Sunday’s marathon participants had to contend with a cold front. Wind chills in the 20s made it the coldest Dallas Marathon Sunday since 2013, with many runners braving the chill as they lined up at the start line.
For those who had come to compete or cheer, the temperature drop was unexpected. Brandy Liddell, a runner from St. Louis, shared her surprise at the cold weather. “We were not prepared for that,” she laughed, although she was still excited about the race, hearing that the crowds were known to be enthusiastic. With the cold front in full force, runners like Tyler Riola from McKinney came prepared with layers, planning to peel them off as the race went on. “I’ve packed a total of about five different layers,” he said, ready for anything.

However, the cold weather wasn’t just on the minds of the athletes. It also raised concerns about the most vulnerable people in the community – those living on the streets. In light of this, race organizers formed a new partnership with the nonprofit Our Calling, which typically doesn’t open its doors on Sundays. This year, they made an exception and opened at 5 a.m. to provide hot meals, shelter, and clothing to those impacted by the cold and the disruptions caused by the race.
As runners shed their layers during the event, many donated them, which was a welcomed gesture for the homeless. "Most races do that because we're known for shedding our clothes,” explained Julie Charbonnet, a half-marathon participant. “It's a way to help others while doing something for yourself. So it’s a win-win.”
By combining athleticism with compassion, the Dallas Marathon created a unique experience this year, where people not only pushed themselves physically but also came together to help their community. Even in the face of unexpected weather, the generosity shown by the participants was a reminder of how events like this can go beyond just the finish line.
