DJ Lagway’s Florida Chapter Closes as Transfer Portal Beckons
Big news is breaking out of Gainesville, and it’s the kind that reshapes a college football program overnight. Florida quarterback DJ Lagway, once viewed as the future face of the Gators, is planning to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal. After two seasons in orange and blue, the highly touted sophomore appears ready to hit reset and look for a new opportunity elsewhere.
Lagway arrived at Florida in 2024 as the crown jewel of Billy Napier’s recruiting class. At the time, he wasn’t just another quarterback pickup. He was a Five-Star Plus recruit, ranked as the No. 1 quarterback and the No. 3 overall prospect in the country. Expectations were sky-high, and early on, it felt like those expectations might be met. As a true freshman, he flashed serious playmaking ability, especially after stepping in when Graham Mertz went down. That first season ended on a positive note, with Florida winning five of its final six games, and optimism around Lagway exploded.

By the time his sophomore season rolled around, Heisman buzz had already started to swirl. He was named the full-time starter, and the offense was expected to take a leap. Instead, things went sideways. Turnovers became a recurring issue, and consistency was hard to find. Over the course of the season, Lagway completed under 60 percent of his passes, throwing 11 touchdowns against 12 interceptions. There were games where the struggles were impossible to ignore, including multiple outings with more interceptions than touchdowns.
Behind the scenes, the road was anything but smooth. Lagway went through a difficult offseason that included surgery for a sports hernia and lingering shoulder concerns that limited his throwing during critical development periods. A strained calf later added to the setbacks. As a result, what should have been the most important offseason of growth for a young quarterback was largely lost. His footwork and mechanics suffered, and those flaws showed up repeatedly on Saturdays.
Now, with Billy Napier no longer leading the program and Florida entering a new era under Jon Sumrall, a change of scenery appears to be the best move for both sides. Lagway is expected to officially enter the portal in January, bringing with him two years of eligibility and immense upside. Despite the rough sophomore campaign, his size, arm talent, and pedigree will make him one of the most sought-after quarterbacks available.
For Florida, this marks another major transition point. For Lagway, it’s a chance to reboot his career and prove that the promise everyone once saw is still very much alive. Wherever he lands next, all eyes will be watching to see if that potential can finally be unlocked.
