Emergency Bushfire Warning as Flames Sweep Through Perth’s South-East
Right now, a major emergency is unfolding in Perth’s south-eastern suburbs, where a fast-moving bushfire has erupted and is putting lives and homes at immediate risk. The warning zone stretches across a large area bounded by Welshpool Road East, Tonkin Highway, Kenwick Road, Brixton Street and Roe Highway. This includes part of the Kenwick Wetlands Nature Reserve, where flames have been seen racing through dry bushland. Homes along Bickley Road and Boundary Road are currently under direct threat, and authorities have stressed that anyone still there needs to act immediately. Rehoboth Christian College is being evacuated, and East Kenwick Primary School, which sits inside the emergency warning zone, has been placed on high alert. The area is a mix of suburban neighbourhoods, semi-rural properties and local businesses, making the fire’s unpredictable movement especially concerning for families and workers nearby.
Major roads have been forced to close, including Wanaping Road and Bickley Road, and traffic along Roe Highway and Tonkin Highway has been heavily disrupted. Drivers are being urged to avoid the area entirely and allow emergency crews to work without obstruction. Authorities have repeated that those leaving should move south toward Albany Highway if it is safe to do so, and that leaving early is the safest option.
