Final Call to Claim Nationwide’s Forgotten £50 Bonus

So, there’s a bit of an important reminder going around, and if you’re a Nationwide Building Society customer, this might actually put £50 back in your pocket. It’s about a bonus that was issued last year, something many people qualified for but may have forgotten to claim—mainly because a lot of the payments were sent out as cheques, and those cheques are still sitting uncashed.

Here’s what’s happening. Nationwide rolled out a one-off “Big Nationwide Thank You” bonus to more than 12 million customers. It was their way of saying thanks after taking over Virgin Money, and most people had the £50 paid directly into their account without needing to do anything. But another group of customers received their payment as a physical cheque in the post. And that’s where the issue is—because if that cheque is still tucked in a drawer somewhere, time is running out.

According to Nationwide’s own guidance, any cheque from that scheme must be paid in by 1 January 2026 . After that date, the payment can’t be claimed anymore. So if you were a member who qualified but never cashed your cheque, this is the moment to double-check your mail piles, old folders, or wherever that envelope might be hiding.

Just to recap the eligibility: you had to be a Nationwide member on September 30, 2024, and still a customer when the payment went out last year. You also needed to meet one of three conditions in the 12 months leading up to the end of September 2024. That means you must have had at least one qualifying transaction on a Nationwide current or savings account, or kept at least £100 in your accounts, or owed at least £100 on a Nationwide residential mortgage. And if you switched to a Nationwide current account between July and September 2024 using the official switching service, you were covered too.

Most people saw the £50 drop straight into their current or savings account. Mortgage customers had it paid into the account used for their direct debit, as long as it was in their name. But for everyone else, a cheque was issued—and this is exactly where those unclaimed payments are stuck.

It’s surprisingly common for these kinds of cheques to be forgotten, especially when they arrive during a busy period or look like standard post. But with the deadline only a few weeks away, this is a good time to make sure you’re not missing out. A simple bank deposit is all it takes, and that extra £50 could be a helpful little boost—especially with costs rising everywhere.

So if you were a Nationwide member during that period, take a moment to search for that cheque. Because once January hits, the chance to claim it will be gone for good.
