The Darkness Bring a New Glow to a Christmas Classic
So, there’s been a fun bit of festive news making the rounds, and it’s all thanks to The Darkness — the band that has never shied away from big vocals, big riffs, and even bigger personality. Their latest seasonal surprise comes in the form of a completely reimagined version of the Christmas classic “Mistletoe and Wine.” And when they say “reimagined,” they really mean it. The track has been taken apart, dusted off, and rebuilt with layers of shoegaze haze and a gentle drone shimmer, creating a sound that’s familiar but dreamier, more dramatic, and undeniably theirs.
The new cover was shared by Justin Hawkins and the band as part of their festive release, and it was introduced with the kind of theatrical flair only The Darkness can deliver. According to Hawkins, this version marks a deliberate musical departure for them, with the original Cliff Richard warmth being wrapped in echoing vocals, choral harmonies, and a sort of glimmering distortion that brings a completely different emotional tone. He even joked that “Jack Frost staring at his toes” would make perfect sense once people heard the track — a playful nod to the chilled-out yet otherworldly atmosphere they created.

This new single arrives during a busy time for the band. Not only have they been revisiting their own Christmas legacy — remember their 2003 hit “Don’t Let The Bells End”? — but they’re also gearing up for their biggest UK tour in two decades. The run is set to kick off in December 2026 in Glasgow and will bring them through cities like Leeds, Manchester, Cardiff, and Brighton, before they play their first-ever show at London’s O2 Arena. It’s a major moment for the Lowestoft rockers, and they’ll be joined on this huge trek by Brothers Osborne and fellow local band A.
Alongside all this, they released their album Dreams On Toast earlier in the year, an album said to be inspired by music that shaped them throughout their lives. It followed singles like “Walking Through Fire” and “Rock And Roll Party Cowboy,” and even featured a cameo from actor Stephen Dorff.
Of course, the band hasn’t been without a bit of rock ’n’ roll controversy either. Guitarist Dan Hawkins recently sparked debate with comments about a tribute performance involving Yungblud and Ozzy Osbourne, calling it a sign of rock losing its edge. The discussion grew into a full back-and-forth online, something you’d almost expect in today’s music landscape.
But for now, The Darkness have shifted the attention back to what they do best: making bold, theatrical, joyfully over-the-top music. Their new spin on “Mistletoe and Wine” feels like a festive treat meant to be belted out, laughed with, and replayed as the season rolls on — glitter, guitars, and all.
