Former Doctor Charged in Major Patient Assault Case

Nathaniel Spencer, who is 38 years old and previously worked as a doctor, has been formally charged with a series of extremely serious offences connected to alleged assaults on patients under his care. According to the charges, Spencer is facing 15 counts of sexual assault, 17 counts of assault by penetration, and nine counts involving sexual assault of a child under 13. In addition to that, there are three further counts of assault of a child under 13 by penetration, along with one count of attempted assault by penetration. These charges cover incidents that were alleged to have taken place between 2017 and 2021, during the time he was working at both Royal Stoke University Hospital in Stoke-on-Trent and Russells Hall Hospital in Dudley.

Staffordshire Police explained that these charges are the result of a long and complex investigation handled by the Public Protection Unit. It was described as a detailed effort to review evidence, speak with numerous individuals, and piece together what was reported across several years. The Crown Prosecution Service, which is responsible for deciding whether cases proceed to court, confirmed that prosecutors had spent considerable time assessing the evidence to make sure the case met the threshold for a criminal trial and that pursuing these charges was in the public interest.
Ben Samples, a senior figure at the CPS, commented that the allegations relate to offences that supposedly happened while Spencer was working in a position of trust as a medical professional. He noted that the seriousness of those allegations required an exceptionally thorough investigation before reaching the point of prosecution.
