GOG Returns to Its Roots as Michał Kiciński Takes Full Ownership
There’s been some big and meaningful news in the gaming world, especially for fans of DRM-free gaming and classic titles. Michał Kiciński, one of the original co-founders of CD PROJEKT, has officially acquired 100 percent ownership of GOG, the digital game distribution platform he helped create back in 2008. The deal was completed on December 29, 2025, and it marks a major shift in how GOG will move forward, while still staying true to its original mission.
For more than 17 years, GOG had been operating as part of the CD PROJEKT Group. Now, the platform has been separated and placed fully under Kiciński’s ownership, with the transaction valued at PLN 90.7 million. It was confirmed that the acquisition was fully financed through committed funding at closing, and importantly, none of Kiciński’s shares in CD PROJEKT were sold as part of this move. So this wasn’t an exit—it was more of a return.

From the very beginning, GOG was built around a simple but powerful idea: when you buy a game, it should truly belong to you forever. No DRM, no forced online clients, and no artificial restrictions. That philosophy has been strongly reinforced again under this new ownership. It has been made clear that GOG will continue to operate independently, keeping its focus on preserving classic games, supporting developers, and giving players real ownership over their libraries.
Kiciński spoke passionately about his personal connection to classic games, explaining that as a mature gamer himself, he still finds deep joy in timeless titles. It was pointed out that well-crafted classics often deliver just as much fun as modern releases, especially in a crowded market filled with low-quality games. Beyond preservation, GOG’s interest in new games with a retro spirit will continue, and Kiciński has hinted that several such projects he’s personally involved in are expected to make a strong appearance on the platform in 2026.
From CD PROJEKT’s side, the move was described as a strategic decision. With the company now focusing fully on expanding its major franchises and developing high-quality AAA titles, this was seen as the right moment to let GOG move into independent hands. A distribution agreement has already been signed, ensuring that future CD PROJEKT RED games, including upcoming Witcher and Cyberpunk titles, will still be released on GOG.
In the end, this deal feels less like a sale and more like a homecoming. GOG is back with one of its founders, guided by the same values it started with: freedom, independence, and games that are meant to live forever.
