Hurricanes Bring Back Fensore Ahead of Matchup With the Maple Leafs
So, there’s been some movement inside the Carolina Hurricanes camp, and it comes at a pretty interesting time—right as they’re gearing up to face the Toronto Maple Leafs. The team has officially recalled defenseman Domenick Fensore from the Chicago Wolves, their AHL affiliate, and the timing definitely grabbed attention.
This recall was announced by Hurricanes GM Eric Tulsky, and it’s happening while veteran defenseman K’Andre Miller is dealing with an illness. Because of that, Fensore has been pulled back into the mix, though it hasn’t been confirmed whether he’ll actually dress for the game against the Leafs. Still, even being back on the NHL roster is a solid sign of the trust the team is placing in him.

Now, if the name sounds familiar, it’s because this isn’t Fensore’s first call-up of the season. He was brought up in late October when the Hurricanes were juggling a wave of defensive injuries. He ended up making his season debut on October 28 against the Vegas Golden Knights, where he logged nearly 20 minutes on the ice—pretty impressive for a young player trying to carve out a permanent role. Outside of that single appearance, though, he’s mostly been used as a healthy scratch during his NHL time this year. So this latest recall might once again position him as depth insurance, depending on how things shake out before puck drop.
What makes Fensore stand out is the kind of production he’s putting up in the AHL. With the Wolves this season, he has racked up 15 points in just 17 games, which puts him second on the entire team in scoring. That’s coming from the blue line, which tells you exactly how much offense he can generate from the back end. Last season, he posted 32 points in 67 AHL games, and he seems to have elevated his game even further this year.
From a long-term perspective, these repeated call-ups might end up being important for him financially as well. Fensore is a pending restricted free agent with arbitration rights, and his current contract is a two-way deal with a relatively modest AHL salary. The more he’s brought into NHL situations—even as a depth option—the stronger his bargaining position becomes for his next contract.
Whether he plays or not, his presence indicates how much the Hurricanes value having him close, ready, and developing under NHL guidance. With the Maple Leafs game looming, the Hurricanes are clearly making sure they have every defensive option available.
