Joe Marler, the rugby star from Celebrity Traitors , found himself in an unexpectedly tricky spot during the Who Wants To Be A Millionaire Christmas special. Even before reaching the £1,000 question, Joe was forced to use one of his lifelines, and it wasn’t long before he turned to the audience for help.
The charity edition of the show had Joe aiming to win money for CALM, the Campaign Against Living Miserably. Host Jeremy Clarkson guided him through the opening questions, but by the time Joe reached the £500 mark, things got complicated. The question seemed simple on paper: “Which snake shares its name with a type of long scarf often made from feathers?” The options were Adder, Python, Cobra, and Boa.
Joe quickly admitted he had no idea. “I’m not a big scarf man,” he joked, before deciding to call on the audience for guidance. With the lifeline activated, the audience overwhelmingly chose Boa, with 93% selecting it as their answer. Following their advice, Joe confirmed Boa as his final answer, which turned out to be correct, allowing him to move on to the £1,000 question.
The challenge didn’t end there. Later in the game, Joe faced a more intimidating question for a six-figure sum: “Which of these multiple Wimbledon men’s singles winners has NOT been victorious in consecutive years?” The options were Pete Sampras, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic. Joe admitted his tennis knowledge was limited and made the bold decision to walk away. “I want to leave immediately, if not sooner. Final answer,” he told Jeremy, ensuring that he would leave the show having won £64,000 for charity.
Jeremy then revealed that if Joe had guessed, he would have lost half the prize, since the correct answer was Rafael Nadal. Viewers were quick to praise the rugby player’s honesty and charm. Social media lit up with fans celebrating his win and calling for him to have his own show, with many noting that £64,000 was a fantastic contribution for a good cause.
Joe Marler’s appearance reminded everyone that even celebrities can be stumped by the simplest questions, and that sometimes, knowing when to ask for help—or walk away—is just as impressive as getting the right answer. His fun and candid approach made the festive special memorable, showing that charity, charm, and a good sense of humor can make for great television.
