Kylie Minogue Finally Claims the Christmas Number One Crown
So here we are, talking about one of the most talked-about chart moments of Christmas 2025. After years of festive near-misses and endless competition from evergreen classics, Kylie Minogue has officially taken the UK Christmas number one spot. And in doing so, she’s done something genuinely historic.

Kylie’s song, simply titled XMAS , has beaten Wham!’s Last Christmas , which had dominated the festive charts for the past two years. It’s a bright, joyful track about presents under the tree, snowy kisses, and that warm, nostalgic feeling people crave at this time of year. While it sounds effortless and fun, this win has been a long time coming. The song arrives an incredible 37 years after Kylie first topped the UK charts with I Should Be So Lucky back in 1988. Because of that, she’s now become the first female artist ever to have UK number one singles across four different decades.
What makes this win even more interesting is how it was achieved. XMAS was released as an Amazon Music exclusive, meaning it wasn’t available on major platforms like Spotify or Apple Music. That decision raised eyebrows, but it clearly worked. Strong streaming numbers on Amazon and YouTube, combined with limited-edition vinyl and CD releases, pushed the song over the line. According to chart insiders, the campaign was tightly targeted, and it paid off with Kylie’s biggest sales week in more than two decades.
Despite her victory, this year’s Christmas chart race was anything but easy. At one point, only about 10,000 copies separated the top five songs. Mariah Carey, Brenda Lee, and Wham! were all right there, fuelled by people replaying their festive favourites on repeat. Wham!’s Last Christmas still proved its global power by topping Billboard’s worldwide chart, even if it missed out on a third UK Christmas number one.
For Kylie, though, the moment has clearly felt personal. She’s spoken about how special the achievement feels and how she plans to celebrate in the most low-key way possible. After wrapping up a massive world tour, Christmas will be spent back in Australia with family, watching cricket and working on a charity-shop jigsaw puzzle that’s already become a bit of a family tradition.
It’s also worth noting that this wasn’t her first brush with festive chart glory. Back in 1988, her duet Especially For You with Jason Donovan narrowly missed the top spot. Decades later, the story has finally come full circle. This time, the Christmas crown has truly been hers.
