McDonald’s “Grinchiest Meal” Brings Holiday Fun — But What’s Really Inside?
So, McDonald’s Canada has decided to kick off the holidays by bringing back one of the most famous festive troublemakers of all time — the Grinch. And this year, they’ve gone even bigger with something called The Grinchiest Meal . It’s playful, it’s nostalgic, and yes, it’s very much designed to get everyone talking. But along with all that excitement, people are naturally asking: how healthy is this seasonal combo really?

Right now, Canadians can order The Grinchiest Meal, which is basically a themed bundle inspired by Dr. Seuss’s green, grouchy icon. The combo includes your choice of a main item — a Big Mac, McChicken, Spicy Habanero McChicken, 10-piece McNuggets, McVeggie, or Spicy McVeggie. There’s also a medium fountain drink, a pair of mismatched Grinch-themed socks, and the newest addition everyone’s curious about: Who-Hash Bites.
These Who-Hash Bites are essentially tater tots — crispy, deep-fried potato bites served in a 133-gram portion. According to McDonald’s nutritional info, a serving sits at around 350 calories, which puts them on the same level as a medium fries. But the similarities end there. The Who-Hash Bites come with higher fat (22 grams) and much higher sodium — 750 milligrams, which is roughly one-third of your total daily sodium limit. Health Canada considers that “a lot,” especially for a single side. Medium fries, by comparison, carry less than half that amount of sodium.
So while the main items in The Grinchiest Meal aren’t unusually over-the-top, the combination of the calorie counts, fat content, and sodium levels makes it clear this isn’t something built for everyday eating. Dietitian Amanda Nash has previously warned that these kinds of themed, ultra-processed items tend to be heavily marketed, especially toward kids, who are more easily influenced by flashy designs and limited-time hype. And while she isn’t saying you should never enjoy fast food, she does suggest being mindful — choosing meals not just for fun, but for nourishment, balance, and family connection too.
Beyond the main combo, McDonald’s Canada has also rolled out several new holiday-themed treats. For the coffee lovers, there are three new McCafé drinks featuring Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough flavours, plus returning seasonal desserts like the Salted Caramel Pie and the Salted Caramel McFlurry. And of course, the Grinch Happy Meal has made its comeback as well, with its own themed extras.
So overall, The Grinchiest Meal is definitely a festive, limited-time bit of fun — one that brings some playful holiday spirit to the menu. Just remember, while it may spark joy, it’s not exactly designed to make your heart grow three sizes in the nutrition department. Enjoy it as an occasional treat, savour the novelty, and maybe keep an eye on the sodium while you’re at it.
