Newcastle Make Four Changes Ahead of Leverkusen Champions League Clash
Newcastle United are gearing up for an important Champions League showdown against Bayer Leverkusen at the BayArena, and head coach Eddie Howe has made four notable changes to his starting lineup. Following their weekend victory over Burnley, Howe has opted for fresh energy and tactical tweaks as the Magpies aim for their fourth win in this season’s group stage.
In goal, Aaron Ramsdale continues to hold his spot, providing the team with stability at the back. In defence, Lewis Hall comes in to replace Fabian Schär, while Dan Burn is expected to partner Malick Thiaw at centre-back. Tino Livramento starts for the sixth consecutive game across all competitions, maintaining consistency on the right flank.

In midfield, Joelinton and Sandro Tonali are drafted into the starting XI, taking the places of Jacob Ramsey and Joe Willock. Bruno Guimarães captains the side, orchestrating play from the heart of the pitch. Up front, Harvey Barnes replaces Anthony Elanga, joining Anthony Gordon, who will be hoping to extend his goalscoring streak after netting penalties in his last two games. Nick Woltemade leads the line for Newcastle and will be aiming to add to his impressive tally of seven goals this season.
Newcastle’s bench is stacked with options as well, with Jacob Murphy and Yoane Wissa ready to come on if needed. Wissa, who made his Magpies debut against Burnley, could make his Champions League bow. The squad also includes academy graduates Max Thompson, Adam Harrison, Lewis Miley, and Alex Murphy, highlighting Newcastle’s blend of youth and experience.
On the Leverkusen side, manager Kasper Hjulmand will be absent due to personal reasons, and assistant Rogier Meijer will take charge for the clash. However, Hjulmand is expected to return for the upcoming derby against FC Koln. Bayer Leverkusen welcomes back key players Alejandro Grimaldo, Arthur, and former Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah after injuries, strengthening their squad for this pivotal match.
The Leverkusen starting lineup features Flekken in goal, with Andrich, Quansah, and Tapsoba forming the defensive line. Arthur and Maza provide stability in midfield alongside Garcia, while Grimaldo, Tillman, Poku, and Schick complete the attacking setup.
Both sides are set for a competitive encounter, with Newcastle hoping to continue their Champions League momentum and Leverkusen aiming to make a strong impression despite their manager’s absence. With fresh changes and returning stars, fans can expect a thrilling match full of energy and tactical battles.
