So, some sad news has been coming out of the music world, especially for fans of The Cure. Perry Archangelo Bamonte, the longtime guitarist and keyboardist for the iconic band, has passed away at the age of 65. His death was confirmed by the band itself through an emotional statement posted on their official website, and it was said that he died peacefully at home over Christmas after a short illness.

Perry Bamonte may not always have been in the spotlight, but his presence was deeply woven into The Cure’s story. He was often described as quiet, intense, intuitive, and hugely creative, and those words feel fitting when you look back at his journey. Long before he officially joined the band, he had already been part of their world. From 1984 to 1989, he worked behind the scenes as a roadie, guitar technician, and trusted support figure, even serving as Robert Smith’s personal assistant. His dedication during those years was quietly noticed, and when keyboardist Roger O’Donnell left in 1990, Bamonte was brought in as a full-time member.

That timing mattered. The Cure had just come off the massive success of “Disintegration,” and Bamonte stepped into a band that was already shaping alternative and goth music history. From there, his playing became part of some of their most loved records. He contributed guitar, six-string bass, and keyboards on albums like “Wish,” which featured timeless hits such as “Friday I’m in Love,” “High,” and “A Letter to Elise.” His work also appeared on “Wild Mood Swings,” “Bloodflowers,” and the band’s 2004 self-titled album.

Over the years, more than 400 live shows were performed with Bamonte on stage, and his role was often felt rather than loudly announced. In 2005, his time with the band came to an end when Robert Smith restructured the lineup, but his story with The Cure wasn’t finished. He reunited with them for their Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2019 and officially rejoined the band for touring in 2022.

Those final years were special. Another 90 shows were played during the “Shows of a Lost World” tour, which many fans consider some of the band’s strongest performances. His last appearance with The Cure took place in London on November 1, 2024, during a one-off event celebrating their first album in 16 years, “Songs of a Lost World.” That night was captured on film, ensuring his final chapter with the band will live on.

Perry Bamonte may have stood slightly in the shadows, but his impact was lasting. He was a steady presence, a creative backbone, and a beloved bandmate who helped shape the sound and soul of The Cure for decades. He will be very greatly missed.
