Peter Greene, the actor best known for playing chilling villains in films like Pulp Fiction and The Mask , has passed away at the age of 60. His death was confirmed by his longtime manager, Gregg Edwards, who revealed that Greene was found unresponsive in his Lower East Side apartment in New York City on Friday afternoon. The cause of death has not yet been disclosed.
Greene was celebrated for his remarkable ability to embody complex, often dark characters. He became widely recognized for his portrayal of Zed, the menacing security guard in Quentin Tarantino’s 1994 classic Pulp Fiction . That same year, he delivered another unforgettable performance as the villainous Dorian Tyrell in Jim Carrey’s The Mask . Edwards recalled that “nobody played a bad guy better than Peter,” while also noting the gentle, kind-hearted side of Greene that was rarely seen by the public.

Born in Montclair, New Jersey, on October 8, 1965, Greene ran away from home at the age of 15 and lived on the streets of New York City. During this period, he struggled with substance abuse, which he later overcame through treatment. Greene’s early life experiences informed his intense, often raw performances, which earned him recognition as one of the most compelling character actors of his generation.
In addition to his iconic roles in Pulp Fiction and The Mask , Greene appeared in several other notable films. He played Redfoot, the fence, in The Usual Suspects , and Detective Jeff in Training Day , in a scene remembered for his calm delivery before being shot by Denzel Washington’s character. His performance in the 1993 film Clean, Shaven , portraying a man with schizophrenia suspected of murder, was widely praised for its emotional depth and intensity.
