Former Jets head coach Rex Ryan didn’t hold back when he broke it down on national television. It was said that while the final call on St. Brown looked correct, the earlier penalty on TeSlaa was completely wrong. According to Ryan, the defender initiated the contact, not the receiver, and the touchdown should have counted. In his words, it was described as an “atrocious” call that may have cost the Lions not just the game, but possibly their playoff hopes as well.
Jared Goff echoed that frustration, admitting the TeSlaa penalty was a bad call, though he made it clear he wasn’t using it as an excuse. Still, the damage was done. Detroit’s postseason chances took a major hit, and now they need multiple things to go their way just to stay alive.
