Rookie QBs Face Off as Jets Battle Saints in Week 16
In a matchup between two struggling teams, the New York Jets (3-11) will head to the Caesars Superdome to take on the New Orleans Saints (4-10) in Week 16 of the NFL season. With both teams already out of playoff contention, this game becomes an opportunity for young players to shine and for the franchises to assess their futures.
One of the key storylines of the game is the battle of rookie quarterbacks. Tyler Shough will make his seventh start for the Saints, while Brady Cook will start his second consecutive game for the Jets. Cook, who impressed in Week 15, is eager to build on his momentum despite the challenges that come with being a rookie. Jets Offensive Coordinator Tanner Engstrand spoke highly of Cook’s performance but acknowledged that there are still rookie moments to learn from. “I definitely thought he did some really good things,” Engstrand said. “But there are some rookie moments that he’ll learn from as we keep going.”

Both teams have had disappointing seasons, but their journeys have been somewhat similar. With three games left in the year, the Saints and Jets are both trying to build around their young core. Saints Head Coach Aaron Glenn noted how both teams have let go of veterans in favor of giving young players more opportunities. The Saints traded away key players like wide receiver Rashid Shaheed and offensive lineman Trevor Penning, focusing instead on developing their rookies, including Shough and first-round pick Kelvin Banks Jr. The Jets have also leaned heavily on younger players, including wide receivers Isaiah Williams, John Metchie III, and Adonai Mitchell, who have formed a budding chemistry with Cook.
Despite the promising young talent on both sides, the Saints are still favored to win, largely due to their defensive strength. The Saints defense has been one of the toughest in the league, allowing just 180.6 passing yards per game, the sixth-fewest in the NFL. They’ve been especially tough in the second half, limiting opponents to just 7.5 points per game in the final two quarters, the best in the league. For the Jets to have a shot, they will need to overcome that stout defense and maintain ball security. Cook, who has thrown five interceptions in his two appearances this season, is focusing on avoiding turnovers as he looks to lead the Jets to a rare road victory.
Defensively, the Jets will also be aiming to bounce back after a rough couple of weeks. After giving up 34 points to the Dolphins and 48 to the Jaguars, they will look to show improvement under interim defensive coordinator Chris Harris, who will be calling the plays in Week 16. Harris is expecting grit and toughness from the defense as they face Shough, who has been playing well in recent weeks and is starting to look like the future for New Orleans.
As both teams finish out their seasons, the game will be a key moment for their young players to prove their potential. With a focus on development, it’s clear that both teams are looking ahead, but for now, they’ll battle it out on the field in what could be a tightly contested game.
