Shirley Ballas Reflects on Her Most Honest Career Chapter as Strictly Series Wraps Up

As the latest series of Strictly Come Dancing comes to a close, Shirley Ballas has taken a moment to reflect on what she now describes as one of the best career decisions she’s ever made. The head judge appeared on James Martin’s Saturday Morning, where the conversation drifted far beyond food and into deeply personal territory, offering viewers a rare and emotional insight into her life.

While James Martin cooked some of Shirley’s favourite dishes, she was gently encouraged to talk about her newest book, a project that clearly means a great deal to her. It was explained that the book feels different from anything she has written before, partly because of how involved her mother was in shaping it. Even the cover choice, Shirley shared, was made by her mum simply because she loves the colour green, which immediately set the tone for how personal the book feels.

Shirley reflected on writing her first autobiography back in 2019, admitting that at the time, she didn’t yet have the confidence to be fully open. She hadn’t been on television very long, and some parts of her story were held back. This time around, things were done differently. Instead of traditional chapters, the book was structured in steps, with each step beginning with a small piece of wisdom from her mother. These life lessons, described as simple but powerful “nuggets,” were said to reflect how Shirley has approached work, resilience, and personal growth over the years.

It was shared that one recurring message is about leaving personal problems at the door before going into work, a lesson Shirley believes many people can relate to. At the end of each step, she also included what she calls “Shirley shimmers,” more reflections passed down from her mum and moments that shaped her journey.

When asked why she feels this book is her best yet, Shirley didn’t hesitate. She said it’s because the writing is raw, honest, and includes stories people might never expect her to share. Topics such as menopause, illness, and even moments of embarrassment were openly addressed, all in the hope that others might feel less alone. She admitted that these were things she probably should have written about years ago, but timing and life experience have a way of changing perspective.

As Strictly recently crowned its new champions and another season officially ended, Shirley’s reflections felt perfectly timed. It wasn’t just the end of a TV series being marked, but a moment of personal clarity, where her voice, confidence, and story finally came together in full.
