Socceroos Land Favourable 2026 World Cup Draw in Group D
So, the latest World Cup draw has just been completed in Washington DC, and the Socceroos now know exactly what they’re up against in the opening stage of the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup. Australia has been placed into Group D, where they’ll be facing the host nation, the United States, along with Paraguay and one more opponent that’s still to be decided through the upcoming European play-off series.
Now, what makes this interesting is that the draw itself has been described as relatively kind to Australia. Coach Tony Popovic even said his squad should be able to get through the group stage, and he sounded pretty confident about it. According to him, anyone who underestimates the Socceroos might be in for a rude shock once the tournament kicks off. And honestly, his confidence isn’t unfounded — Australia is ranked 26th in the world, and while the US sits higher at 14th, Paraguay is further down the list at 39th.

The fourth team in the group will come from a European play-off between Türkiye, Romania, Slovakia and Kosovo, so that final spot is still wide open. Depending on who qualifies, the group dynamics could shift a little, but Popovic made it clear that every World Cup draw is tough in its own way, and this one is no different. Still, he believes the team is in a good position.
This World Cup is already historic, with a record 48 teams competing, and matches will be spread across the United States, Mexico and Canada. Because Australia landed in Group D, they’ll be playing all their group-stage games in the western region — that means cities like Seattle, Vancouver and locations in California. The organisers have grouped venues to minimise travel distances, which should help keep players fresh.
What’s really striking is the level of hype around the event itself. The draw ceremony featured celebrities like Heidi Klum and Kevin Hart, performances from Robbie Williams and Nicole Scherzinger, and even appearances by major political leaders including US President Donald Trump, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. FIFA also used the occasion to present Trump with its first-ever “FIFA Peace Prize,” which was… unexpected, to say the least.
Meanwhile, American fans seem delighted with the draw. Some analysts in the US have already called the matchup with Australia a “lay-up,” suggesting the Americans expect a smooth run. But the Socceroos know that being underestimated can sometimes work in their favour, and Popovic seems ready to lean into that idea.
A full match schedule will be released shortly, and Football Australia is preparing a ticket ballot after more than 150,000 fans registered interest. All in all, it’s shaping up to be an exciting start for the Socceroos, and Group D is definitely one to watch.
