Sony to End PS4 Games on PlayStation Plus Essential Starting 2026
There’s a big shift coming to PlayStation Plus, and it’s one that marks the end of an era for PS4 players. Sony has officially confirmed that starting January 2026, PlayStation Plus Essential will no longer include PS4 games as part of its monthly lineup. From that point on, the games offered each month under the Essential plan will be exclusively for the PlayStation 5. This isn’t a sudden move, though. It was announced well in advance, giving players more than a year to prepare for what is clearly a strategic transition.
According to Sony, this decision has been made to better optimize resources and focus investments on the newest platform. The PlayStation 5 is now well into its life cycle, with a growing global user base and strong sales across multiple markets. As a result, it was felt that the monthly PS Plus Essential games should better reflect where the PlayStation ecosystem is heading, rather than where it has been.

This move follows a familiar pattern in the gaming industry. As newer hardware becomes dominant, support for older generations is gradually scaled back. While millions of PS4 consoles are still in use worldwide, the console is clearly entering the final phase of its lifecycle. Sony is still expected to support online services and release select cross-generation titles for now, but the main focus of development and marketing is firmly centered on the PS5.
For PS4-only players, the biggest change is the loss of monthly free games, which have long been one of the most attractive benefits of the Essential plan. However, online multiplayer access will continue to be available, meaning the core functionality of the subscription remains intact. Sony appears to be betting on the PS5’s strong backward compatibility as a bridge. Nearly the entire PS4 library can be played on PS5, often with better load times and smoother performance, making the upgrade path more appealing.
It’s also worth noting that this change applies only to the Essential tier. The Extra and Premium plans will continue to offer large game catalogs spanning multiple PlayStation generations. These higher tiers remain attractive options for players who value variety and on-demand access to a broad range of titles.
In the bigger picture, this update to PlayStation Plus feels more symbolic than abrupt. It signals the gradual closing of one of the most successful console generations in gaming history while reinforcing a clear message: the future of PlayStation gaming is being built around the PS5, and PlayStation Plus is evolving to match that future.
