Tesco Brings Back Free Fruit for Kids to Kick Off a Healthier 2026
There’s some genuinely feel-good news coming out of the UK right now, especially for families trying to stretch their budgets while still eating well. Tesco has announced that it’s bringing back its popular Free Fruit for Kids scheme, and it’s starting immediately. From December 30 through January 13, free fruit will be handed out to children in more than 800 full-sized Tesco stores across the country, with the aim of making healthy eating easier and more accessible as the New Year begins.
Under this two-week campaign, boxes of free fruit, mainly apples, will be placed near store checkouts, making them easy for kids to grab while shopping. For families using Tesco’s Click and Collect service, the offer won’t be missed either, as 119 locations will include free fruit with those orders as well. It’s estimated that more than three million apples will be given away during the campaign, which shows just how large-scale this effort really is.

This initiative is being brought back at a time when it’s badly needed. According to recent government data from the National Diet and Nutrition Survey, fewer than one in five people in the UK manage to eat their recommended five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. For children, especially those from low-income households, the numbers are even more worrying, with only around one in ten meeting daily nutrition targets. That gap is exactly what Tesco says it’s trying to address.
Tesco’s UK CEO, Ashwin Prasad, has explained that the focus is on making healthy choices simpler, quicker, and better value for customers. By combining free fruit for kids with special offers, Clubcard Challenges, and fresh recipe ideas, healthy eating is being encouraged in a way that feels practical rather than preachy. The idea is that good habits can be built early, and that healthy food doesn’t have to feel boring or expensive.
The free fruit scheme is just one part of a much wider healthy-eating push from Tesco as 2026 approaches. From mid-January, selected shoppers will be able to earn extra Clubcard points by buying fruit, vegetables, beans, pulses, and other nutritious staples. New Clubcard Prices and weekly Fresh 5 offers will also be running, alongside recipe inspiration shared through Tesco Magazine, social media, and its online food hub.
All in all, this move is being welcomed as a simple but meaningful step. For parents, it’s a small financial help. For kids, it’s a positive nudge toward healthier habits. And for everyone heading into the New Year, it’s a reminder that eating better doesn’t always have to cost more.
