Tragedy Strikes on Christmas Morning Along the Sagamu–Ijebu-Ode Expressway
What was meant to be a calm Christmas morning in Ogun State quickly turned into a scene of heartbreak after a fatal hit-and-run accident claimed the life of a pedestrian along the Sagamu–Ijebu-Ode Expressway. The incident, which occurred around 8 a.m. on Christmas Day, has left residents shaken and once again raised concerns about road safety on one of the state’s busiest highways.
According to information released by the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, the victim was a male pedestrian whose identity had not been confirmed at the time of reporting. He was reportedly attempting to navigate the roadway near Odogbolu Junction, inbound Ijebu-Ode, when he was struck by an unidentified vehicle. The driver involved did not stop to offer help and was said to have fled the scene immediately, long before emergency responders could arrive.

By the time officials reached the location, the man had already lost his life. Images from the scene showed his lifeless body lying by the roadside, with visible injuries, particularly severe damage to the head, indicating the force of the impact. The expressway, known for heavy traffic and speeding vehicles, was momentarily thrown into a somber standstill as passersby gathered in shock at what had unfolded.
The spokesperson for TRACE, Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed that the incident was a clear case of hit-and-run involving an unidentified vehicle. He explained that no immediate details were available about the driver or the vehicle responsible, making the situation even more troubling. As has often been the case in similar incidents, the absence of the driver complicated early efforts to piece together exactly how the accident occurred.
In a later update, it was disclosed that members of the deceased’s family had come forward. They arrived at the scene and evacuated the body for burial, bringing a quiet and emotional closure to the immediate aftermath of the tragedy. While the family’s action allowed the road to return to normal flow, it did little to ease the grief surrounding the sudden and violent loss.
This incident has once again highlighted the dangers faced by pedestrians on major expressways, especially during festive periods when traffic volume increases and drivers may be less cautious. It also underscores the persistent problem of hit-and-run accidents, where victims are left helpless and families are forced to seek answers without accountability.
As investigations are expected to continue, many are calling for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and greater responsibility from drivers. For now, a life has been lost, a family has been thrown into mourning, and the Sagamu–Ijebu-Ode Expressway has added another tragic story to its history.
