Tragic Freak Accident Claims Life in McDonald’s Drive-Thru in Nebraska

It all unfolded on a Tuesday morning, just after 10:20 a.m., at the McDonald’s located on West 2nd Street. Police and firefighters were rushed to the scene after an emergency call reported that a man was trapped in the drive-thru lane. When first responders arrived, they found a 69-year-old man pinned between his own vehicle and the restaurant’s payment window area. It was a shocking and rare scene, one that even seasoned officers described as highly unusual.

The man was later identified as Michael Dickinson, a longtime resident of Grand Island. According to police, he was the only person inside the vehicle at the time. Investigators believe that Dickinson had opened his driver-side door while reaching out toward the payment window, possibly to hand over money or retrieve something. At some point, the vehicle appears to have moved unexpectedly. Whether the car lurched forward on its own or was accidentally engaged is still unclear, but in that moment, Dickinson became trapped between the open door frame and the drive-thru counter.
He was quickly transported to CHI St. Francis Emergency Room, but despite medical efforts, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Police officials emphasized that there was no sign of foul play and described the incident as “100 percent a freak accident,” underscoring just how unpredictable and tragic the situation was.
During the chaos, a McDonald’s employee reportedly went outside to help by entering through the passenger side of the vehicle. That employee was injured in the process and taken to the hospital by ambulance, though authorities later confirmed the injuries were not life-threatening and the employee is expected to recover.
The Grand Island Police Department’s Accident Reconstruction Team was called in to carefully examine the scene and piece together exactly how the accident occurred. Assistance was also provided by the Grand Island Fire Department and the Hall County Attorney’s Office. After several hours of investigation, the scene was cleared around 12:35 p.m., and the McDonald’s restaurant reopened later that day.
