Causeway Chaos Eases After Northbound Bridge Crash Shuts Traffic
If you were anywhere near the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway on Monday afternoon, chances are you felt the ripple effects of a sudden and frustrating traffic disruption. The northbound span of the Causeway, which carries drivers from New Orleans toward the Northshore, was temporarily shut down after a serious crash brought traffic to a complete standstill.
The incident was reported shortly after 3 p.m., right in the middle of the afternoon commute. According to bridge officials and Causeway Police, the crash occurred just north of the drawbridge, around the 16- to 17-mile mark. It involved a truck and a trailer that overturned and jackknifed across the roadway. In some early reports, it was also mentioned that multiple vehicles were badly damaged, creating a scene that required immediate attention.
As a safety precaution, all northbound lanes were closed while emergency crews responded. The southbound span, however, was kept open, allowing traffic heading toward New Orleans to continue moving. Drivers trying to reach the Northshore were urged to find alternate routes, though options are limited when one of the world’s longest over-water bridges is suddenly unavailable.

The good news is that, despite the dramatic nature of the crash, no injuries were reported. It was confirmed by officials that no vehicles went over the bridge, and everyone involved was said to be okay. Still, the cleanup process took time. Mangled vehicles and debris had to be carefully removed, and the overturned truck and trailer needed to be cleared before the bridge could safely reopen.
Bridge General Manager Carlton Dufrechou explained that it was initially unclear how long the closure would last, but it was expected to run at least an hour. As crews worked quickly, the northbound span was reopened shortly after 4 p.m. Even then, drivers were warned to expect heavy traffic as congestion slowly eased and backed-up vehicles began moving again.
For many commuters, the closure served as a reminder of how vulnerable major travel routes can be to unexpected incidents. A single crash on the Causeway can instantly affect thousands of drivers and disrupt travel across the region.
By early evening, traffic conditions continued to improve, though minor delays lingered as the flow normalized. Officials indicated that more details may be released later as the situation is reviewed, but for now, the focus remains on safe travel.
If you’re planning to use the Causeway in the coming hours, patience is still advised. Even after reopening, it often takes time for traffic to fully recover from an incident of this scale.
