Strikers Shuffle Squad as Thunder Clash Promises Another BBL Thriller
The Adelaide Strikers are back home at Adelaide Oval, and there’s a sense that this next match against the Sydney Thunder is about more than just two points on the Big Bash League table. After a tough road trip that ended in a 33-run loss to the Perth Scorchers, the Strikers have been forced to regroup, refocus, and make a small but telling change to their squad.
Only one alteration has been made to the 13-man group for the January 6 clash, but it’s a notable one. Fast bowler Hassan Ali has been brought back into the side, adding experience and pace to the attack. To make room, spinner Tabraiz Shamsi has been left out, with the balance tilted toward seam bowling for home conditions. It’s a move that signals intent, especially with the Thunder’s batting lineup in mind.

The Strikers will be keen to put their last outing behind them. Despite the loss in Perth, there were positives to take away. Lloyd Pope was outstanding with the ball, finishing with figures of 4 for 23 and showing once again why he remains a key weapon. With the bat, Liam Scott and captain Matt Short chipped in with useful contributions, scoring 33 and 31 respectively, but the overall effort fell short against a strong Scorchers side.
Now, back on familiar turf, the focus shifts to a Thunder team that has been struggling for momentum this season. Sydney Thunder have found themselves on the wrong side of several close finishes, and confidence has clearly been tested. Even standout performances haven’t translated into wins. David Warner, in particular, has carried the batting load, but his efforts have often come in losing causes.
That was seen again in their recent narrow defeat to the Strikers, where a tense final over sealed a six-run victory for Adelaide. Warner batted through the innings, finishing unbeaten, but the chase fizzled out at the death thanks to disciplined bowling. Luke Wood kept his nerve under pressure, while Jamie Overton played a crucial role earlier by breaking key partnerships and slowing the Thunder’s progress.
In that match, Adelaide’s innings had its own ups and downs. A steady partnership between Jason Sangha and Mackenzie Harvey helped rebuild after early wickets, and later contributions ensured a competitive total despite a late stumble. It wasn’t perfect, but it was just enough.
As the teams prepare to meet again, the Strikers will be hoping their slight squad tweak pays off and that home advantage works in their favor. With tickets still available and a lively Adelaide Oval expected, the stage is set for another closely fought contest where small moments could once again decide the outcome.
