Super Eagles Dominate Mozambique as Nigeria March Confidently into Afcon Quarter-Finals

So, this was one of those Afcon nights where everything just seemed to fall into place for Nigeria. The Super Eagles cruised past Mozambique with a commanding 4–0 win in the last 16, and honestly, it felt like a statement performance from start to finish. From the opening whistle in Fes, Nigeria looked sharp, confident, and completely in control of the game.

The tone was set early. Nigeria were already on the front foot inside the first few minutes, and although an early Victor Osimhen effort was ruled out for offside, the warning signs were very clear. Mozambique tried to stay compact, but the pressure kept building, and eventually it told. In the 20th minute, the deadlock was broken when Ademola Lookman finished calmly after a clever cutback from Akor Adams. It was a goal that summed up Nigeria’s approach — quick, purposeful, and well-coordinated.

Just five minutes later, the lead was doubled. Osimhen, always lurking in dangerous areas, was played in following some sharp midfield work, and the finish was applied from close range. At that point, the match already felt like it was slipping away from Mozambique. Nigeria’s movement up front was causing constant problems, and the Mambas struggled to get out of their own half.

Any hope of a Mozambique comeback was effectively ended just after the restart. Within two minutes of the second half, Osimhen struck again, tapping in at the back post after another dangerous delivery from Lookman. At 3–0, the contest was all but decided, and Nigeria were allowed to play with freedom and confidence.

Even then, the Super Eagles did not take their foot off the gas. Chances kept coming, the tempo remained high, and Mozambique’s goalkeeper was kept busy. The fourth goal arrived in the 75th minute, and it was fully deserved. Akor Adams, who had already provided two assists, powered home a fierce strike to cap off an excellent individual performance and make Nigeria the first team to score four goals in a single match at this tournament.

Beyond the goals, what will really please Nigeria is the clean sheet. After conceding several times in the group stage, this was a disciplined defensive display to match the attacking flair. Mozambique, to their credit, fought hard and can take pride in their historic first knockout appearance, but on this night, the gap in quality was clear.

With this win, Nigeria move confidently into the quarter-finals, where they will face either Algeria or DR Congo. On this form, the Super Eagles are not just advancing — they are sending a strong warning to the rest of the tournament.
