Courtney Sarault Claims Stunning Third Medal in Olympic 1000m Showdown
Courtney Sarault has done it again and this time she has carved her name even deeper into Olympic history.
On the ice in Milano Cortina, under the brightest lights of the Winter Games, Sarault powered her way to a silver medal in the women’s 1000 metres short track final. It is her third medal of these Games and that makes her Canada’s first triple medallist of Milano Cortina 2026.
From the very first lap, Sarault looked in control. Starting on the inside, she surged straight to the front. Calm, composed, constantly checking over her shoulders, she dictated the pace for most of the nine-lap race. In short track speed skating, position is everything. One slip, one bump and your medal hopes vanish. But Sarault held firm through the chaos.
With just a few laps remaining, the pressure intensified. Dutch star Xandra Velzeboer made her move and slipped into the lead. South Korea’s Kim Gilli briefly challenged as well and for a moment the podium picture looked uncertain. But Sarault responded. She fought back, reclaimed second place and crossed the line just behind Velzeboer to secure silver.

This medal is not just another podium finish. It adds to the silver she earned in the mixed relay and the bronze she captured in the 500 metres earlier in the Games. Three medals, across multiple events, against the fastest women in the world. That speaks to consistency, resilience and championship mentality.
It also places her in rare company. Canada has won very few Olympic medals in the women’s 1000 metres in short track history. Before today, only Nathalie Lambert in 1994 and Kim Boutin in 2018 had reached the podium in this event for Canada. Now Sarault joins that elite list and she does it as part of a broader breakout performance on the Olympic stage.
At just 24 years old, she is not only delivering results, she is becoming a leader for Canadian short track. And with relay events still ahead, there is even the possibility of adding more hardware to an already remarkable campaign.
For Canada, this matters. Medal counts shape national momentum. They inspire the next generation. And in a Games filled with pressure and global tension, performances like this unite fans across the country and beyond.
Courtney Sarault arrived in Italy as a strong contender. She now leaves this race as one of the defining athletes of these Winter Games.
