Massachusetts Schools Closed Amid Record-Breaking Nor’easter
Massachusetts is in the grip of a historic nor’easter and the impact on daily life is severe. Across the state, schools have shut down as blizzard conditions take hold, with some areas already buried under more than two feet of snow. Communities from the South Coast to MetroWest are facing relentless snowfall, wind gusts that make travel dangerous and the very real threat of coastal flooding.
The storm began late Sunday and continues through Monday evening, with the heaviest snow falling this morning. Reports show southeastern Massachusetts could see up to 30 inches of snow, while Boston and surrounding MetroWest areas are expected to get between 12 and 18 inches. Even Worcester County and parts of Western Massachusetts are not spared, with 6 to 12 inches accumulating. Visibility is near zero in many areas and the National Weather Service has issued a Blizzard Warning for eastern Massachusetts through 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Schools across the region have canceled classes preemptively to keep children and staff off the roads. For parents, this creates immediate challenges, from childcare needs to adjusting work schedules. But officials say safety is paramount, given the dangerous road conditions, falling power lines and widespread outages that already affect nearly 340,000 homes across New England.
The storm’s intensity is unusual, even for New England. Snowfall rates of more than two inches per hour have been reported, making it nearly impossible for plows to keep up. High winds are causing whiteout conditions, which could turn minor accidents into life-threatening situations. Coastal communities are preparing for flooding as waves crash against seawalls, adding another layer of risk. Emergency crews are on alert, but residents are being urged to stay home unless travel is absolutely necessary.
The broader impact goes beyond schools. Businesses are closing, public transportation is disrupted and even essential services face delays. This storm is a stark reminder of how extreme weather events can paralyze entire regions and it highlights the importance of preparedness and local emergency planning.
