Cold Air Surge: Taiwan Temperatures Could Plunge to 8°C as Chilly Nights Loom
A sudden drop in temperatures is now gripping Taiwan and forecasters say the coldest moment may still be ahead. Across the island, the weather has turned sharply cooler, with early morning readings already dipping close to single digits in several regions.
Overnight observations show clear skies dominating the area and that calm, cloudless setup is allowing heat to escape quickly after sunset. This process, known as radiative cooling, is a key reason why temperatures are falling so rapidly during the night and early morning hours.
In fact, some of the coldest readings have already been recorded in northern and central areas. Towns in Hsinchu and Miaoli reported temperatures just around 9 degrees Celsius before sunrise. Other regions across the island have seen morning lows generally ranging between 10 and 13 degrees, a noticeable chill for many residents.
But meteorologists warn that the cold air mass moving southward from the Asian continent could make tonight even colder. When combined with continued radiative cooling, temperatures in some low-lying areas could briefly approach 8 degrees Celsius. That is close to the threshold used to classify a strong continental cold air mass.

During the daytime, conditions remain much more comfortable. Sunshine and dry air are helping temperatures climb back into the low twenties in northern Taiwan, while central and southern regions may reach the upper twenties. That large swing between day and night temperatures means people could experience warm afternoons followed by very chilly evenings.
Looking ahead, weather models suggest the stable pattern will hold through the weekend and into much of the coming week. High pressure over the region is expected to keep skies mostly clear and rainfall limited. Mornings and nights will stay cool, but daytime temperatures will gradually rise, becoming pleasant and eventually slightly warm in some areas.
Still, the wide gap between daytime warmth and nighttime chill will remain a defining feature of the forecast. That kind of temperature swing can catch people off guard, especially in places where early mornings could still hover near 10 degrees.
Meanwhile, meteorologists are also monitoring a tropical system known as Parabola, which is expected to weaken quickly into a tropical depression over open waters. Forecast agencies differ slightly in their assessments, but most agree the system poses little direct threat.
For now, the main story is the cold snap and the sharp temperature swings it brings. Residents are being urged to stay warm during the overnight hours and pay close attention to updated forecasts as conditions evolve.
