Quebec Braces for Winter’s Return: Snow, Ice and Slippery Roads Ahead
A sudden shift in the weather is putting Quebec on alert as a complex winter system moves through the province. After a brief taste of spring, residents can expect a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain that could make travel hazardous.
Tuesday will be a day of contrasts. In the southern regions, including Montreal, Montérégie and Estrie, temperatures will hover around the freezing mark. This means rain will dominate, but brief episodes of freezing rain are possible, especially during the morning and evening. Roads and sidewalks could become dangerously slick, even with only a few millimeters of ice. Commuters are being urged to exercise extreme caution during peak travel hours.
Further north, the picture changes. Areas such as the Laurentides, Saguenay, Bas-Saint-Laurent, Gaspésie and parts of central Quebec will see a return of snow. Accumulations could reach 10 to 15 centimeters in some sectors, a reminder that winter isn’t done yet. In Abitibi and near Chibougamau, snowfall will also be significant, although it may not reach record levels.

The system is expected to arrive in two waves. The first will bring snow and freezing rain early Tuesday morning. Montreal and surrounding areas may see a brief mix of sleet and ice pellets. After a short break during midday, when temperatures may rise slightly above freezing, a second wave is likely to return, bringing another round of freezing rain to the Saint Lawrence Valley and fresh snow to northern regions.
Meteorologists explain that this pattern is the result of a classic atmospheric setup. A low-pressure system originating from the Colorado region is moving northeast, while a high-pressure zone to the north keeps cold air trapped at the surface. Warmer air aloft rides over this cold layer, creating perfect conditions for freezing rain. Essentially, the province is getting a combination of winter and early spring at the same time, making conditions unpredictable.
Looking ahead, Wednesday should bring a break with alternating sun and clouds, but the relief may be short-lived. Another system is expected Thursday night, potentially bringing more snow and ice and keeping temperatures in the low single digits in southern areas.
