Trump Fires DHS Secretary Noem, Names Sen. Mullin as Successor
The Trump administration has shaken the Department of Homeland Security with a sudden leadership change. President Donald Trump announced on social media that he is removing Kristi Noem from her role as DHS Secretary, naming Senator Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma as her replacement, effective March 31. Noem was informed personally by Trump as she arrived at an event in Nashville and she promptly expressed gratitude, describing her new role as Special Envoy for The Shield of the Americas, a Western Hemisphere security initiative.
Noem’s tenure at DHS has been marked by controversy and growing scrutiny. Concerns ranged from her handling of federal immigration incidents to her department’s high-profile advertising campaign, which prominently featured her. Lawmakers questioned her decision-making and her relationship with a senior adviser drew public attention. Internally, DHS officials reportedly expressed frustration with both Noem and her aide, Corey Lewandowski, citing micromanagement, personnel disputes and questionable use of federal funds.

Several recent incidents accelerated the decision. Noem’s choice to pause TSA PreCheck during a government funding lapse was quickly reversed amid backlash. Her testimony at congressional hearings this week drew sharp questioning from both Republicans and Democrats and President Trump reportedly disagreed with her claim that he approved the DHS ad campaign. In Minneapolis, after the tragic deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, Noem’s responses were widely criticized, prompting the White House to send Tom Homan to handle the situation directly.
Senator Markwayne Mullin brings a very different profile to DHS leadership. Elected to the Senate in 2022 after five terms in the House, Mullin is a staunch Trump ally with a reputation for intense, hands-on involvement in legislative negotiations. He has experience bridging House and Senate factions and overseeing appropriations for lawmaker security. Known for his physical fitness routines and larger-than-life presence on Capitol Hill, Mullin has often been dispatched by the White House for media appearances, which reportedly factored into Trump’s decision.
This shake-up is significant for U.S. national security and the administration’s domestic operations. DHS faces ongoing challenges, including immigration enforcement, border security and managing federal resources amid political scrutiny. Mullin’s appointment signals a shift toward a leader closely aligned with the president’s priorities and congressional confirmation will now determine how quickly he can take the helm.
For the department, the transition may bring both uncertainty and an opportunity to reset priorities. Officials within DHS are already strategizing for the changes and the broader political landscape will watch closely. Stay tuned and follow this story as it develops, because the next chapter of U.S. Homeland Security is now taking shape.
