Cunningham Drops 45 as Pistons Survive Magic Thriller to Force Game 6
This one came down to the wire in Detroit and Cade Cunningham just delivered a performance that will be talked about long after this series ends. A relentless 45-point explosion, a playoff career high, has kept the Detroit Pistons alive with a 116–109 victory over the Orlando Magic in Game 5.
From the opening minutes, this game had the feel of a heavyweight fight. Detroit came out aggressive, attacking the paint, drawing fouls and building early momentum behind Jalen Duren and Tobias Harris. But Orlando, even without Franz Wagner due to injury, refused to fade. Paolo Banchero stepped into the spotlight, answering possession after possession and keeping the Magic within striking distance.
The turning point, though, was Cunningham’s control of the game’s rhythm. Every time Orlando made a push, he responded. Whether it was a midrange pull-up over tight defense or a deep three late in the shot clock, he never let Detroit lose its edge. By halftime, he already had 27 points and the question wasn’t whether he was playing well, it was whether anyone on Orlando could slow him down.

The third quarter saw momentum swing in waves. The Magic trimmed the deficit repeatedly behind Banchero’s scoring bursts, including tough drives and timely threes. But Detroit kept finding answers through hustle plays, offensive rebounds and timely shot-making from role players stepping into pressure moments.
Then came the fourth quarter, where the intensity reached another level. Orlando made it a one-possession game late, cutting the lead to just three after a series of defensive stops and perimeter shots. But Cunningham shut the door. A critical jumper with under a minute remaining, followed by composed free throws, restored control for Detroit and broke Orlando’s final push.
When the final buzzer sounded, the Pistons had done more than just survive. They forced a Game 6, shifting the series back to Orlando with momentum finally back on their side.
This win matters far beyond a single night. For a top seed staring at elimination, it was a statement of resilience and star power under pressure. Now, the series continues and everything is on the line once again.
Stay with us as this playoff battle heads into Game 6 with tension, momentum and survival all still in play.
