Camper Stolen With Man and Cat Inside Sparks Police Chase in Whakatāne
A routine evening in Whakatāne has escalated into a tense and unusual police pursuit after a woman allegedly stole a camper van, unaware that a man and his cat were still inside the vehicle. What began as a parked camper near the Whakatāne Heads quickly turned into a dangerous moving incident that unfolded across several kilometres of coastal road.
Authorities say the incident started around 8:50pm near Seaview Road when an individual allegedly entered the parked camper. But what made this case extraordinary was that the owner was asleep in the rear sleeping area at the time, along with his cat. When he woke up, he found a stranger attempting to drive the vehicle away. He confronted the person immediately and told them to stop, but instead of complying, the driver allegedly continued moving the camper onto public roads.
From there, the situation escalated rapidly. The camper travelled toward Ōhope with the man still inside the rear section, forced to stay calm as the vehicle moved at speed. Police were contacted immediately and dispatchers maintained a live line with the man inside, helping him stay composed while officers tracked the vehicle’s location in real time.

What followed was a carefully coordinated response. Police say their priority was the safety of the man inside the camper, who had no seatbelt and limited movement options. He was guided to sit on the bed and hold onto a fixed surface to avoid injury as the vehicle moved.
As officers closed in, the camper eventually came to a stop near Wainui Road, close to the State Highway 2 roundabout. Reports suggest a mechanical issue may have contributed to the vehicle stopping. The entire incident lasted roughly 20 minutes before police moved in and arrested the driver at the scene.
Remarkably, both the man and his cat were found unharmed after the ordeal. A 28-year-old woman from Whakatāne has since been charged with unlawfully taking a motor vehicle and failing to stop and she has been remanded in custody pending further court proceedings.
This case has raised serious concerns about vehicle security and the unpredictable risks of opportunistic crime. It also highlights the critical role of coordinated police response in preventing what could have become a far more dangerous situation.
