Elizabeth Line Chaos Hits Heathrow Route After Signal Failure
A major signalling failure has brought one of London’s most important transport corridors under severe pressure, disrupting Elizabeth line services between central London and Heathrow Airport and leaving thousands of passengers facing delays, cancellations and uncertainty.
The disruption is linked to a fault detected at Hanwell, which quickly spread its impact across multiple Elizabeth line routes. Trains running between London Paddington and Heathrow, as well as services extending toward Slough, Maidenhead and Reading, have been hit hardest. Passengers travelling across the wider network, including connections toward Abbey Wood, Stratford, Shenfield and Heathrow Terminal 4 and 5, are also experiencing widespread disruption.
With the signalling system affected, trains are still able to operate, but only under strict limitations. That means drivers are relying heavily on basic signal instructions, forcing trains to run at reduced speeds. As a result, services are moving more slowly than normal, with delays building across the network and some journeys being altered or cancelled entirely.

Transport operators have warned that disruption is expected to continue into the late afternoon, with delays potentially reaching up to 20 minutes or more in some cases. For a line that serves as a critical artery into Heathrow Airport, even small delays are creating a ripple effect across both domestic and international travel plans.
National rail authorities have advised passengers to check live journey updates before travelling and, where possible, consider alternative routes or delay non-essential journeys until services stabilise. Some travellers affected by the disruption may also be eligible for compensation, provided they retain their tickets and document their journey details.
This incident highlights the vulnerability of heavily interconnected rail systems, especially on routes like the Elizabeth line that combine commuter travel with major airport connections. When a single signalling fault can slow down an entire network, the impact is not just local, it spreads quickly across regions and affects both daily commuters and long-distance travellers.
Engineers are working to identify and resolve the fault, with efforts underway to restore normal signalling operations as quickly as possible. However, until full recovery is achieved, passengers should expect continued disruption and plan for extended travel times.
As the situation develops, stay alert for the latest updates, check your journeys before departure and follow official guidance as transport teams work to bring one of London’s busiest rail links back to full strength.
